That Widnes team of the late 1980’s early 90’s under Doug Laughton was absolutely magnificent, full of power pace and skill. I was at a lot of those games shown on here, should’ve won a lot more than they did. They were the best RL team for about 5 years.

This is fantastic. It brings so many memories of so many great players back. I'll never forget Joe Lydon's try at Old Trafford.....and the attendance that day was the largest the ground had seen that year. In the Stretford End we were going frankly bonkers. But I'll never forgive Joe for THAT drop-goal against Wire at Maine Road....

Love it. This was my prized possession on video tape in 1988, I was a recently converted union player, my hometown had started a league team in the Christchurch, new Zealand comp. "Timaru Warriors". Senior 3rds, basically social grade but us converts took it serious, lol. There were plenty of ultra experienced old dogs playing 3rds too, they knew all the tricks. Great times great games, great friendships. On this gem of a tape, Green Vigo is my deadset favourite, what a swerve. Warmed my heart to see this on KZbin today. Cheers.

I was a Hull FC fan since the late 70s and we had some great NZ players turn out for us in the early to mid 80s such as Kemble, Fred Ah Kuoi, Dane O'hara and James Leuluai. Jimmy Leuluai's side step was a thing of beauty - as seen in this video against Castleford and Wigan. Richard Swain in the mid 00s was also a major influence on us winning the challenge cup in 2005. I play masters rugby now I'm an old fart into my 51st year, no games this year due to you know what but last game I played I got two broken teeth when a player stuck his nut down into my jaw when I tackled him. So much for social rugby particularly when you don't recover quite as well as you used to.lol Do you still get a run out?

@@ynotnilknarf39 kia ora brother. Sorry I'm late getting back at you. No I'm long retired now, lol. Still miss it tho. I ended up in Wellington NZ in the early 90s, playing for Petone panthers. Our coach was James leuleuai. An absolute gentleman and real student/teacher of league. There was a kiwi trial in Welly one year and James invited me and another bro to his place for dinner. Clayton friend, howie tamati, Gary Kemble were there. We sat listening to them reminisce about there UK days. So funny, and interesting. James said they lost a challenge Cup at Hull, he stayed home for a week and eventually he went to the shop and a senior citizen threw a pie in his face, lol. He thought it was funny sharing it, and he said that was just the intensity of the fans. He said the good times far outweighed the bad. My boy and James son Thomas played mini league together as kids. Great memories and it's nice to connect with a true league man. All the best to you mate, and your family. Peace from Aotearoa/ new Zealand.

How good was Joe Lydon back in the day? Interesting to watch this, and compare it with the Crowning Years about the great Welsh Union side from '69 to '79. The standard of league was MUCH higher.
@ldfreitas94372 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and how would that standard have been if so many of those Welsh rugby union stars hadn't defected to league?
@DHTCF2 жыл бұрын
@@ldfreitas9437 the standard in league would still have been higher, I suspect, because the game focusses on core skills, whereas too much time in union is taken up with restarts. Plus, in the '69 to '79 era - the one covered in the film I mentioned - not many from the starting Welsh 15 went.
