Very cool. South Kelsey is my favorite trail. There are a lot of magical places to explore if you’re not intent on getting any particular place. Most are hidden, some are obvious. It’s very different, depending on the season. Great in winter, spring, summer, and fall. You guys are troopers. Trail workers do volunteer and come up there to work on it, so the clarity of the trail changes from year, but there’s no denying that there are some uttterly confounding easy to get lost in sections. Fortunately you can always follow the river and avoid getting totally lost if you have to make your way home. A LOT of rattlesnakes in certain sections too. And there always is some certain relief when going up that long switchback to the parking lot. I think everybody identifies with that.

I've "Domed" twice, late '60's, early '70's. So, I'm one of those "Cables Wimps"(Laughs!!)!! So, I want you to DISABUSE everyone, once and for all--Snake Dike WOULD NOT make a doable site, to punch in an alternative Cables route would it? Your camera angles showed us an incline that far much steeper than The Cables right-of-way, from what I can determine. At Subdome, Park Rangers are all over that, like white on rice, to ensure Permits Compliance. Now, what if, you had descended those [sissy] Cables, 3, 4 hours earlier and had run into those Rangers. Life could suddenly become very interesting, if they would not believe that you'd ascended up Snake Dike. "Where's your dagbalsted Permits?! They are to be on your person, for the entire duration of your hike!!" Anyway, I am very much in awe, of you kids--CONGRATULATIONS!!

Can someone this that has little to no experience climbing do this If they where with experienced climbers ?
@pebblepusher9264
@pebblepusher9264 5 ай бұрын
The answer is it depends. With no climbing experience I’d probably not do it. That being said it depends on how experienced your friends are and how adventurous you are. Do you know how to rappel and if not do your friends know how to lower you? Honestly if you can climb a 5.10 a in a climbing gym you should be able to make it but it would be pretty awful to make the long hike to the base and then freak out on the route because you aren’t used to heights

I repelled only a couple times in my life other than an inside rock walk . and that was off a 70’ cliff I taught myself by watching KZbin video lol And buying my own gear . Looking back that was pretty risky but super adventurous ! every time I go to the needles I see six shooter and always want to climb it . But don’t know anyone that’s into climbing was hoping to just hike as far as I can and maybe run into the right group of ppl willing to help ?

Yeah multi pitch climbs are not something climbers are likely to take a random person up. So you got two options: 1 hire a guide 2 start hanging out at the climbing gym and make some friends

Always sucks to get off trail when you’re on a timeline. Thanks for showing us the Top Down. We’ve done the bottom regular route and got stopped where you had to rappel down. Awesome area all around. Thanks again and have lots more great hikes.

@pebblepusher9264 7 ай бұрын
Probably the best first time technical canyon. It’s has a couple of raps and if you are woefully underprepared for the cold water you likely won’t die. That being said a bunch of people have died in here during flash floods so check the weather.

Honest question: was it necessary to hike that with a full pack? lol
@pebblepusher9264
@pebblepusher9264 7 ай бұрын
Absolutely not. I only have a single set of crampons that fit on my mountaineering boots which we were not sure if we would need. It turns out all the people on all trails were just a bunch of fear mongers, but it was the only pack I had which would fit my mountaineering boots

Nice job guys! Good call on cutting the stuck rope and getting moving, I know how cold that is. A few years back I got hypothermic after getting a rope stuck on rappel #4- rope strands got twisted and wouldn't pull down. I had to improvise a prussik by scavenging the drawcord from my pack and ascending to sort out the strands, then re-rapping and finishing out the bottom with chattering teeth. The hike out warmed me up plenty. Afterward, the chicken flautas at the Bit and Spur never tasted better. Thanks for bringing me back to that day!

My friend from Texas did Snake Dike the same way as you did and he was so wiped out he could barely talk three days later. According to my friend leading him he was so gripped on those 2K feet of slab before you top out he was on his hands and knees most of the way. They were about 24 hours car to car.

The best way to do those routes is to sleep at the base. I remember doing NW regular and topping out at 11pm after being out of water since 4. Fortunately there's a spring at the base but I've never been so thirsty in my life.
@pebblepusher9264
@pebblepusher9264 9 ай бұрын
Yeah I know how that feels. I know the climbing rangers frown on sleeping at the base of everything but half dome although I’m not sure what they’d say about sleeping at the base of snake dike with the campground in little Yosemite valley campground so close.

Hmmm you know I don’t want to say it wasn’t bad and then you get freaked out, but I can say there was no part where I even got nervous and I get scared close to the edge so I’d imagine that someone who hike the Grand Canyon a lot would be absolutely fine.

@@pebblepusher9264 Thanks, I have not been to Zion in a few years (it has gotten so crowded as of late), but I have been thinking in the off months I might try that hike. Of course, snow and ice would make it even more challenging! Thanks for the tips.
