So are you going to show off more boss battles now? It's been 16 years. 😅

The ending is konda sad but that early morning send off from the in game friends is what really made me tear up. They're only trusting us on our word and are willing to help albeit just in spirit.

While literally sobbing my eyes out, I literally shut off my Gameboy Advance when my Charmander turned into a ball of pure light and started floating away with the heartwrenching track, 'Farewell' was playing. As a 10 year old I literally thought the game ended there and I didnt want it to end so i shut my game off. I was so upset. It wasnt until I looked it up and saw that the game wasnt actually over and you came back and continued playing as yourself that I stopped shutting it off. That scene broke my 10 year old heart. I was so attached to pikachu and friends!

NGL, the ending was pretty damn emotional and seriously touching for me, I played as a Cubone and chose the Pikachu to be my partner, which unbeknownst to me back then, made the ending even more tragic. Being that Pikachu served as the perfect foil to my Cubone, with the more withdrawn and somewhat antisocial personality of his, dynamically contrasted with the more lively, emotional, open, and affectionate Pikachu. And to watch them over the entire durration of the story, grow to bond with each other into the closest of friends in spite of their obvious differences, made the eventual departure of my Cubone from the only true friend he ever really had for his entire known life as a pokemon, even more heart-wrenching. For truly. Pikachu was the only person who actually managed to reach out to the withdrawn cubone on such a deep and emotional level, and who showed the Cubone genuine warmth and compassion which he was mostly isolated from as a loner, and who stood by Cubone even when the entire world was against him and wanted him dead. And was the first, and only person who remained a true friend from the very beginning of Cubone's journey, to the very end, and who despite having to go their separate ways in the end, left Cubone never able to forget the time such compassion and warmth had been given to him by his only real friend. I would have liked for it to have ended there. But then I felt when the story was about to wrap up almost perfectly, the story did a complete 180, and kinda committed a full-on cop-out, where my cubone magically re-appears for no apparent reason, and without any concern for the fact that Cubone has no concern or perhaps even memory of his former human life before he became a pokemon, basically rushing a happy ending without concern for any genuine conclusion that would make sense, such as what the other pokemon including gardevoir would think about the player abandoning his human family and friends, which gave me complete emotional whiplash, along destroying what had initially enjoyed most in the story. In truth I believe that the creators wanted to originally have the story finish off by this point (being thematic of having to grow up from the "isekai" or escapist fantasy into the "real" world, yet never forgetting the close bonds you made along the way, finishing off the hero's journey) but possibly because of the slightly more "mature" themes, needed to make the ending less of a downer, as it's target demographic (kids) may find it too off-putting. As well as making the game uncompletable or even just unplayable without having to start a brand new game, and leaving out any opportunity for post-game content.

I remember crying when watching this. It was such a long journey to get to that point. I don't remember much about the game, I wasn't that good at it. But I'll never forget when the friends down below are grieving and then the credits go.

Funny story, I originally wanted Pokémon Ruby and I asked my grandad to look for it and he got this. I was honestly confused at first but as I played I didn't regret it and loved it more. No way was I prepared for this ending, I was totally floored. Safe to say I loved the mystery dungeon franchise after and forever hehe.

I am surprised that the first game in the series is already 15 years old, and then we have Explorers which is now 13 years old, Gates 9, and Super 5. BTW Xanetic, the game you played actually got remastered to the Switch in 2020 after 15 years. Maybe you could come back and play the remaster with the same Pokemon again.

I have a fake memory of a different, more somber ending. The choice to return to the world of Pokemon is not given to you, and you wake up in a dark school classroom as a silhoetted human. As music fades in, your silhouette reorients themself and leaves through the door as music begins to play. No idea how I ever misremembered a completely extra scenario playing out
