Not a flat spin! A flat spin is horizontal with no airflow over the rudder so little hope of recovery. Thumbs down for a misleading title.
@StefanoBorini
@StefanoBorini 4 ай бұрын
it is a flat spin, but only briefly at 0:06. The glider self recovers to a nose down position when there's no airflow on the tailplane.

It’s not a flat spin; in fact in a flat spin the aircraft nose isn’t vertical to the ground like in the video clip.

That isn’t a flat spin… it’s a steep spin and you can’t recover from a flat spin unless you have immense engine power like a fighter jet…

sorry man but no. it is a falt spin and you can get of flat spin by conteracting the rotacion force. in takes a lot of strengh to do it but it works
@crazy8711
@crazy8711 Жыл бұрын
@@EngineEnginer Let me tell you this, that was a normal spin, flat spin would mean that his centre of gravity would be further behind pushing the planes nose up, with that you loose all stream on every control surfaces, meaning 0 control. The only reason fighter jets can get out is due to their immense power basically pushing them out. Flat spin would also mean that the nose would show further up into the sky not down or slightly down like it was for them.

In my opinion it’s not a flat spin but a vertical down flick roll with a subsequent spin. The aircraft is a Swift, full aerobatic glider. 5 g is not an issue.

It is a flat spin, but only around 0:06 , then the nose pitches down and develops in an ordinary spin, followed by ordinary recovery. I suspect that it's really hard to sustain a flat spin in a glider that is naturally nose heavy when the tailplane is no longer providing a compensating lift, like it seems to be the case here.

Did You use the air brakes to dissipate the energy of the flat spin quicker? I assume this was unintentional due to a over energetic flick... Weird sound when the flat spin slows down.
@StefanoBorini
@StefanoBorini 4 ай бұрын
never use airbrakes on high energy maneuvers. It will introduce mechanical stresses due to uneven lift distribution in the wings and you will break them.
@erikisberg3886
@erikisberg3886 4 ай бұрын
@@StefanoBorini That is very good advice generally, my old books are wrong about this recommending using airbrakes (spoilers for those so inclined) during high g pullups etc. High g:s at high airspeed will load the wing unfavorably and unevenly. The stress cracks seen on old gliders on the corners of brake boxes are often due to this. Furthermore POH permitted airspeed brakes exrended is lower than Vne for many types. Current recommendation is to pull max g:s + or - inside the flight envelope to recover from shitty situations. A puch or K21 has a lot of drag during high g. During a high energy flatspin (only about half a turn in the video?) the wings are lightly loaded and on some types extending the brakes can save a lot of altitude due to the monumental sink rate as I understand it. Some competition pilots also use airbrakes safely during 0 g manuevers like downline rolls. Never tried that... But it is supposedly useful for low Vne aerobatic gliders like Pilatuses. I still wonder if he used the airbrakes for stopping the flat part of the spin, I think the sound indicates it.

Even with half playback speed the spin entry looks violent. I guess the flatspin intself feels like pretty smooth death trap. Is there a limit how many turns you can do until it is no longer recoverable?

It looks like he started in a dive and then did a rapid roll to produce high momentum around the vertical axis. He then re-oriented the glider to horizontal in an accelerated stall with full pro-spin rudder. The angular momentum is then aligned with the yaw axis of the aircraft while fully stalled. My guess is that it would decay into a regular spin over time. Watching this makes me kinda wantta puke. Guess that's why I never got into aerobatics.
@erikisberg3886
@erikisberg3886 10 ай бұрын
@@MrSunrise- You got the right idea, the fox and swift are very prone to flat spin on exit from a flick IF the stick is held fully back a bit to long after initiating the flick. it needs to be released somewhat before exit. Otherwise the glider transitions into a high energy flat spin which You have to sit out for some turns, exiting by normal spin is best. Altitude loss is impressive. There is an even better video of this in a fox, just cant find it.
