Camped in Panamint Springs and it was our Base Camp. We did Goler Wash to Barker Ranch. Explored Ballarat and checked out graveyard. Seldom Seen Smith is finally at rest. This is my favorite area to explore. Highlight was Warm Springs Talc camp and Murrietta Mining camp and Striped Butte Geologist cabin. All have 1st come 1st served camping in cabins, Too "Hanta Virus" for this retired nurse. Great video! Let's keep these trails our secret. Great wheeling trails get ruined by dingbats who don't respect Western History. Think someone will pick up their trash after they leave.

@@ExploringCabinsandMines There are two ways up, One coming from Cerro Gordo. This trail traverses across the mountain to the top tram station. The other would be coming up from Keeler. In the past we usually take the loop from the Owens Valley up to Cerro Gordo and then across. There is also a trail behind Cerro Gordo that come ups from behind. This trail starts on the road into Saline Valley before South Pass. Hope this helps, Fred

@@explorer1fred I'm hoping one of the ways a stock 4x4 suburban could make it which is the easiest? I'm coming from Washington state and I don't think my wife would like the route you're on in the video lol !

This trip, by the way which was years ago, we came up to Cerro Gordo, Traversed across to the Salt Tram and then proceeded down to Keeler. I've also done this is a Ford E-350 Sportsmobile. It can be a bit scary on the narrow shelf road from Cerro Gordo, there is no berm and your tire on a full size vehicle is right on the edge. As for time of year, it all depends on the snow fall in the Inyo mountains which are in the rain shadow of the Sierra Nevada's. There can be enough snow build up on top that travel in a wheeled vehicle is impossible.

I just got home from a Moab to Mexican Hat trip that included this section of the trail... it took over four hours for us to get our three vehicles through the last section. I knew, because I’d seen this vid, that it was going to be tough, I didn’t know how tough it would turn out to be. I was driving a Colorado Z71 with 3” lift and got stuck just like on the vid. My Nephew was driving a 4Runner with no lift and he really got stuck and my brother in law lead the way with a land cruiser and no real problem. His winch was our salvation! I’d do it again in a heartbeat!!!

Great video! I'm planning on an overland trip from Tassi Ranch to Grand Gulch Mine and was wondering how technical this trail is with the self roads. Looks like it's not that bad and there is room for others to pass if anyone is coming in the opposite direction.
@explorer1fred
@explorer1fred 3 жыл бұрын
The trails have change much over the years. Grand Gulch Mine trail traveling up the canyon has been "tamed" by some blade work I assume done by the Park Service or the BLM. Depending on your attitude this could be either good or bad news. The trail up past Savanic Mine has continued to erode and become increasingly challenging near the actual mine. To answer your question, much of the trail up the Savantic is a shelf road with little room for passing. The Grand Gulch Mine for the most part follows a "canyon" where one can pull aside if there is traffic coming the other way. I must say however, I've never met anyone on any of my trips on either of these trails so I don't know how much this should be an issue, it's pretty remote out there., Thanks Fred

Just did Goler by way of Ballarat to Warm springs 12/27/20. Road was in great condition. Mengel pass had snow which made it a little sketchy. We had a stock GMC Yukon Denali, that made it with only a flat tire, in the group! Spent one night at Ballarat and one at Warm springs. People have cleaned up one of the houses nice enough for our group to cook dinner and enjoy the fireplace. Not as ratty as I have seen in the past.

I have done trips up to and past Briggs Camp. Did another up Gohler and down Mengal into Striped Butte last year. That run down from the pass was rough with big rocks. So rough it was concerning I was still on the road for long sections as far as I could see. It was just my truck with my girl and I. I was happy to make it without breaking anything. Very happy I did not get stopped spinning tires against rocks. Completely happy after building ny 87 full size Bronco I did it in my 4x4 prerunner in 2wd the whole way. My girl is not much of a off road person not doing it much so she could not spot me if I needed it. Like you jeeple are in this video or off a curb.
