Many thanks Dan, another very good tutorial for us Fuji users. Just 1 questions, have you tried an image quality comparison editing the same RAW file in LR and Fiji X through to a final Jpeg? Many thanks, Chris.
@DanBaileyPhoto7 күн бұрын
Hey Christopher, thanks for your comment. I have not played around with that kind of comparison, at least not in awhile. I haven't really used LR for a few years. I was always been happy with my LR exports in terms of quality but X RAW STUDIO does a much better job rendering the different Fuji film looks. It would be nice if you could export a new RAW file from X RAW STUDIO, but even if you could, LR would still revert the image to it's own color profile and you'd have to use their versions of the Film Simulations, so that wouldn't really be any benefit. Basically, you have to decide whether you want the flexibility of more sliders and adjustments in LR, or the exact Fuji adjustments in X RAW STUDIO. Either way, if you come up with something you like in either program, I think that both will end up exporting a great quality image. What are your findings?
@christophercross5716 күн бұрын
@ Hi Dan, many thanks for your reply. My work flow is memory card to computer drive, then load into LR. Process the RAWs then export 1600 x 1200 jpegs for club competitions. This works very well for me, but keep reading that Fuji X Studio and Capture 1 do a better Job with our Fuji files, which nags in the back of my mind. I will practice with Fuji X and make some comparisons. Just on another subject, I hope you get your hands on the new 500mm prime soon for a review, looking forward to that. I’m still enjoying my 100-400mm but expect this to give better IQ. Best wishes, Chris.
@DanBaileyPhoto5 күн бұрын
Yes, in my experience, X RAW STUDIO and Capture One do a better job decoding and more accurately replicating the secret recipes of the Fuji Film Simulations. X RAW will obviously get them perfect, since they're the ones who own the recipes, which are held secret. The don't give out those to anyone. C1 seems to do a little better job than LR, but here's the thing: It's all kind of subjective. May RAW shooters don't make use of the film sims, because they prefer to do their own processing and color adjustments. Some people like to apply one of the Fuji film sims inside the software before making further adjustments, and that's where you'll see a slight difference. X RAW is limited, because you only have the same adjustment as what's inside the camera: film sims, H/S Tone, Clarity, WB, etc..., where LR and C1 give you many more options (sliders) to adjust your images. It boils down to what you want for your images. If you're happy with your final LR jpegs, than really no need to switch, although you might compare with C1, just to see how well you like the interface and color color options... but of course, that could open up another rabbit hole, because I'm guessing you already have a big LR catalog. Switching that all over could be problematic. Adding yet another software to your workflow is always adding more complications. If you're pretty happy with how your photos look straight out of the camera, and only do minor adjustments and don't do anything like local adj, layers, or if you want to experiment with different film sims and a few settings, then X RAW STUDIO is a very simple and straightforward solution. Hope that helps.

I have the 70-300 and the 100-400. What I can say is the 70-300 is 90% of what the 100-400 is. The 100-400 is sharper at 400mm than the 70-300 is at 300mm. I need to keep the 70-300 below 250mm to keep absolute sharpness. The 100-400 focuses faster, and it is a bit faster speed at every focal length. It handles the 1.4TC better than the 70-300. When using the 1.4TC on the 70-300, I still get to F8, but at a much shorter focal length. Because of its slight loss in sharpness at 300mm, adding the 1.4TC at 300mm usually results in slightly soft images. I am keeping both lenses because the 70-300 is worlds ahead regarding portability, but if I am going on a wildlife shoot, the 100-400 goes with me.
@DanBaileyPhotoАй бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts about these two excellent lenses. I mirror your analysis, both are extremely useful in a variety of situations. The 100-400 is indeed a beast of a lens and an excellent performer in critical situations, but you can't beat the portability, and performance of the 70-300 when you want to go with a lightweight kit. Despite the redundancy in focal length, they make for excellent companions in your overall lens arsenal.

Shannon, check and see if the AUTO switch is enabled. Other causes might be that the camera is set to another shooting mode, like MOVIE or ADV. Press the Drive button and make sure the camera is set to either Single frame, or CL/CH. Let me know if any of those solutions work.

Sorry for the lateness but what happens if I use the speed at 2 at all times? My camera focus seems “jumpy” when i get closer/away from the subject in video mode, like it looks like it’s stepping from one focus point to the other but its really noticeable
@DanBaileyPhotoАй бұрын
Which AF-C parameter are you referring to? There are two that use numbers:Tracking Sensitivity, Speed Tracking Sensitivity. Tracking Sensitivity is how fast the camera will look for a different subject if it temporarily disappears from the AF sensor. 0 tells it to switch immediately. 1-4 make it progressively longer, so less jumpy. Setting 2 is less jumpy than 4, but more jumpy than 0. If you're talking about Speed Tracking Sensitivity, keeping it at 2 will optimize the camera for tracking erratically moving subjects. That could cause the AF to jump around, because it's anticipating a subject that's moving quickly and in different directions. In other words, more "jumpy." Hope that helps. What kinds of subjects are you shooting?

Im new to fuji - is there a way to shoot video manually in C1 when assigned to photo? Im having trouble with the shutter speed and auto exposure changing constantly when i hit record. Or do i need to switch modes to shoot video manually? thank you!!
@DanBaileyPhotoАй бұрын
Hi Kelly, I just tried this out with my X-T5, and yes, what you're asking works, in a way. If you put the camera on C1 (or any other C mode), and press the REC button while the camera is set to STILL mode, it will shoot video with all your C1 settings. However, what you're noticing, is that the camera seems to choose a shutter speed automatically, based on your ISO, frame rate (such as 23.98p, or 59.97p etc...) and your aperture, even if the camera is set to manual mode. I guess it does this, so that no matter how the exposure settings are configured, when you press the movie REC button, the camera will automatically ensure that you will get well exposed footage. Does this make sense?

The Arca Swiss foot was a big sell point, and it works read with most tripod heads. But I really wish the groove extended the entire length of the foot. I started using the 150-600 for BIF video and the foot doesn't fit a large base well. I had to bolt a 6 inch Arca plate to the foot so I could properly balance my XT5 on the video head. Minor issue, but take note if you're going to use a video head.

@@DanBaileyPhoto I quite like it! I've also used it with the 1.4 teleconverter. But it is truly difficult to fill the frame and track a fast flying bird at 900mm equiv, let alone 1240 mm equiv! Using this lens at full zoom with BIF pushes the XT5 autofocus to the limits of its ability.

I have an X-M1 and was excited about the X-M5 so preordered one, but today after looking at the flippy screen on my X-S20 and whether I really use the tilt screen on the X-M1 I realised I needed the tilt so cancelled the order. Seems all these new cameras are being marketed as hybrid with video first; are they forgetting about us photographers?
@DanBaileyPhoto2 ай бұрын
David, thanks for your comment. As with many features, the screen is definitely a preference thing. Some people love the flip screen, even a few still photographers I know, while it seems that most of them prefer the tilt screen. I'm a tilt screen guy myself, which is why I much prefer the X-T5 over the 4, which I now use as a dedicated video camera. That said, if I were to get an X-M5, it would be used as a backup or an ultralight camera for things like cycling, and I would learn to live with the flip screen, simply because the camera is so small and light, and also because I do find it useful for video. There are times when I find it frustrating, though. 😆 Do you have other Fuji's besides your X-M1 and X-S20?

Here's my thoughts on your Fuji autofocus tutorial Dan. Autofocus shouldn't require the user to adjust a bunch of settings in advance depending on what the subject will be, the camera should be able to focus on any subject..... automatically.
@DanBaileyPhoto2 ай бұрын
Thanks for your count, Graham. In most situations, that's exactly what happens. On the Fuji cameras, this would be done in the Wide/Tracking AF Mode. That said, every modern camera has a host of AF settings that help you optimize how the focus system performs and "looks" for your subject, and knowing how these settings work and how/when to use them in specific situations can make you a more proficient photographer. If you are interested in my course, know that I have a 100% guarantee, so if you run through all the lessons and decide that it wasn't worth your money or time, or if you feel you didn't learn very much, then I'd gladly give you a refund. Thank you for sharing this interview. I was mainly a Nikon user since 45 years and was curious about the Fujifilm camera's. So I bought the XT30II with the kit lens and later bought the 35mm/f2 and the 18mm/f2 and I loved the pictures that came out of the camera. Recently bought the X100VI. I discovered FUJI X WEEKLY. What a beauty this website! So well made. I am a webdesigner and I know how difficult it can be to organise all information on a clear way. The colour simulations to choose from are a bit overwhelming. I installed 6 new recepys on C2 -C7 and left C1 for neutral. It is like you are a child in a candy shop. So many choices. I understand why Dan is using the 'native' recipes that are installed inside the camera. I nearly use them, because I am constantly experimenting with the recipes I find online. Maybe I should limit myself using all these simulations so that I get a better idea in which situations the 'native' recipes are used for the best result. Thanks to the video 'How to Use FUJIFILM X RAW STUDIO' I love to play with all the recipes and see what the result will be. Hope you will make more videos about camera stuff. Yesterday I received my new Rolleiflex Baby. A adorable little beast. It is a pity there hardly is any 127 film on the marked (expensive for 12 pictures) Have a nice day from Holland

Thanks fro your comment! I had a great chat with Ritchie for this interview, so I'm glad you enjoyed it so much! He really does have a cool thing going with his FUJI X WEEKLY site. I do play around with different settings in my Fujis, often making adjustments to Shadow Tone or Color, or using the Monochromatic Color settings when shooting black and white, but for whatever reason, I tend not to save them to my Custom Settings, or if I do, it's usually just one or two. Maybe it's because I like to respond in a unique way to each shooting situation. Sometimes I'll go with the stock film sets and no adjustments, while other times I'll make a few changes, and then move on. We each have our own method, and that's the great thing about photography and creative pursuits like this.

Again, you’re welcome. There’s so much creativity to be had with the film simulations, experimenting with the different settings and making your own recipes. Did you watch my interview video with Ritchie the Fuji X Weekly guy? kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5zNqp-oeMukr8U

Thank you for your comment, I'm glad you found this helpful. Which X Series camera are you currently using, and are you considering one of theses two lenses?

@ I recently purchased the x-t3 with the 10-24 F4 and followed that up with the 16-80 F4. After your comparison, I think that I will ask for KEH gift cards for Christmas to purchase the 70-300 and the 35 mm F2 prime for fun. Next year I will get the 1.4 extender. Regardless, I love the system and am super happy that I switched from Canon.

KEH gift cards definitely make good stocking suffers!! So glad you're enjoying the Fuji system. Let me know if you every have any questions about the X Series cameras or features. What kinds of subjects do you like to shoot?

Better EVF + weather sealing & this little camera would have been something special. I just think Fuji didn't want to make it an X-T5 replacement. Shame but I still bought one anyway 😅 Maybe an X-T50 II will solve that

Thanks for your comment, Paul. I agree, but its design and features are consistent with the history of the X-T10/20/30 line. Adding those additional components, would have brought the price too close to the X-T5. At any rate, how are you liking your X-T50 so far?

@@DanBaileyPhoto Loving it, the size is perfect for travel with a small lens on it

It is indeed! I just did a three week vacation and only took the X-T50 with 3 lenses. I love my X-T5, but the slightly smaller and lighter body was nice while traveling!

This os amazing! My 14 year old son is learning to fly gliders. He chose photography at school because he wants to photograph his view when flying. Can't wait to show him this. Thanks for being inspirational! 😊

Looks like on this video you should have focussed on you manually and left it in manual.

This would be difficult since I'm shooting these videos by myself. I don't have a Dan Bailey stand-in to use for test focusing. 🤣 When I do these, I generally use Face Detection.

Haha!! It was definitely windy out there today, but not too cold. I was shooting out the window with bare hands. Give it another month, and it will be a totally different story!! 🥶❄️
