Because you're wrong and they aren't. Amazon has lost this fight. The RTO will fail and remote work is not only here to stay, but is being expanded easily. In 2-3 years all work will be remote.
@Mikerty391Ай бұрын
Remote work serves the employee, not the employer. That is why remote work will wilt on the vine. I wish it wasn't true. There is no data to suggest remote work is expanding. The opposite is true, companies are bringing employees into the office.

I thought it was less about efficiency and more about restoring shoppers back downtown. Entire industries are affected by office workers working from home (restaurants, coffee shops, etc.) Also, they want people back in person to collaborate on projects in one room, together. Don't come for me about "my meetings are still remote" because in that case, this wouldn't apply to you specifically. I think the future looks like negotiating for remote days in the onboarding process or it'll be available for long-term, trusted employees. Otherwise ya, everyone else has to go back into the office.

I've been working as a remote software engineer for the better part of the last 15 years. It's my opinion that hybrid arrangements are the most beneficial and the most effective. There are several days each week where I think to myself "it would be really nice if i could work from an office today" or "this would be so much easier to coordinate if we could meet face-to-face". While I agree that FORCING people to work from an office isn't a good solution, I also see the immense benefit from having a co-working area in which I can collaborate with other engineers. It's just easier. But forcing that on people who don't work well that way, or impacting their work-life balance isn't a good way to go about it.
@Mikerty391Ай бұрын
Right, I feel like everyone will agree that no one should be "forced" into the office. But maybe that's too much freedom for ICs as far as tech companies think
@waraiotoko374Ай бұрын
How they do this calculations? Its just a caprice of the decision-makers. They dont like remonte work because they cant assert their authority.

There's been back-to-back layoffs in tech. This is just an excuse to make some workers leave. The efficiency losses and gains of working in the office or from home are so negligible that it makes little sense to kill off flexible work completely. So the alternative explanation is that they want you to quit.
@Mikerty391Ай бұрын
100% agree you nailed it.

As a former blue collar worker turned remote work for Silicon Valley / big tech, we literally contribute nothing beneficial to society. You are no exception. If we all go back into the office any time soon, just man up. Side note: get your T levels checked; you can truly 'get your life back'
@Mikerty391Ай бұрын
If tech workers have to go back they can't complain because they ultimately work for someone else. Yeah it's frustrating that they can't do XYZ but if you're so upset start your own thing.

Amazon made their warehouse employees work like robots, and now those robots replace many employees on the floor. It is only a matter of time before they also replace those employees working in the office, or working remote! Don't be comfortable at work, because one day a new manager may join your company and all of a sudden you are on your exit talking to HR for no valid reason, even if you love your job and colleagues... It actually happened to me with a director. He will probably wake up one morning thinking how much could be saved by replacing you with two offshore resources!😆

It's sad that employers don't treat their employees with any respect anymore. There's so many changes that can happen in your company to disrupt your happy balance which are 100% out of your control.

While I am grateful someone is speaking on this topic, it would have been much better and more relevant to hear it from someone who is actually going through this transition - from work back to the office, then someone who doesn’t have to worry about it. Interview one of your colleagues actually and acutely experiencing it.

My company is based in europe and i used to work as IT Business Analyst and IT Architect for industry leaders for almost a decade. I think that remote will stay and it will stay forever at least for IT Jobs, because at some point small companies can't compete with salaries and general benefits of big companies, while employees of big companies having to do braindead work for decades (as i said, this is big corporate in the EU), basically just switching syntax from cobol, to java to whatever is next, building the same (micro) service for the millionth time. And then you have small agile companies, which will pay you less, but you probably will get less bored, due to changing work and those will stick to a remote modell. I personally have figured that employee satisfaction is way more benefitial than anything else, because happy people are willing to "suffer" more when it is needed, like working overtime, being more proactive to support the company and so on. When i was an employee i worked with many consultants which tryed to measure software engineers (SWE) efficiency and they all failed, because nobody could come up with a metric which actually does what it is supposed to do, due to the fact that a SWE is doing more than just typing down lines of code or working X hours. I think my point is that the market and the current working generation will decide on wheather remote work will stay or not, because they might just refuse to take the 2x salary, because they "earn enough" and want to enjoy their freedom more while working remote and don't care if their CV has Amazon, Google or just company XYZ in it. I never worked at FAANG, but i can tell from experience that working for industry leaders is cool to a certain degree and then it's just the same shit over and over again.
