This makes me wonder if any change in buoyancy was noticed when in fresh water.

Great to see. My Great Great Uncle, Sgt. Walter Behler, from Hamburg PA, paid the ultimate price during the oise-aisne offensive on August 12th, 1918. He was a member of the 28th serving with the 108th machine gun battalion.

Really amazed to find this. One of the Captains in the 16th Engineers was a relative. I just visited his grave in St.Mihiel, France (taken by Spanish flu ), and the huge field hospital they built at Mesves sur Loire. The buildings are gone but the huge field is strewn with their debris.

They need to raise it. Stupid to have shelled it to the bottom. All that needs to be done is formally ask the British government for premisison to raise it for display. No reason not to over 100 years later. The boogy man can't hurt you anymore.

@@kylesunday5618 the Welland canal - through Ontario - bypasses Niagara river and the Falls. That being said, I do not know if that is the route taken by UC-97. You might want to check this out! Good luck.

They didn't have a choice but to destroy it. A clause of the armistice treaty required all German combat vessels held by Allied forces to be destroyed before 1 July 1921. (Source: Wikipedia - article: "SM UC-97" - "SM" stands for "Seiner Majestät" (English: His Majesty's) and combined with the U for Unterseeboot would be translated as His Majesty's Submarine.
Száz évvel ezelőtt, amikor a világ az I. világháború sebeiből gyógyult, Harry Hill Bandholtz vezérőrnagy Magyarországon szolgált, mint a Szövetséges Katonai Misszió amerikai tagja. 1919. október 5-én a Magyar Nemzeti Múzeumot az a veszély fenyegette, hogy külföldi csapatok kifosztják. A csak egy lovaglópálcával és éles elmével felszerelt Bandholtz vezérőrnagy ezzel a felirattal pecsételte le a múzeum ajtaját: „Ezen ajtót a Szövetséges Katonai Misszió parancsára pecsételték le. H.H. Bandholtz, a Bizottság napi elnöke, 1919. október 5.” E cselekedetének köszönhetően a gyűjtemény Budapesten maradt.

According to the historical fact about his standoff with the Romanian military, he had persuaded them to stop looting the National Museum with nothing more than the crop and the force of his personality. The incident is described in detail in his book An Undiplomatic Diary by the American Member of the Inter-Allied Military Mission to Hungary, 1919-1920. Today the crop is on display in the Hungarian National Museum. RESPECT!!!

This is absolutely wonderful! I was gifted a collection of items from my father-in-laws father, whom served during WW 1. A box with hundreds of pieces of memorabilia from the war, both from the German and US sides.... Research from those items led me to this video (actually a web page in Ann Arbor, MI, which was invalid and I ultimately tracked it here) .I believe without a doubt Earnest H. Guy is somewhere in one of those clips. I just wish I could have found this while Charles was still alive. Thank you very much for posting this video.

Excellent video.. thank you for making it, I served 25 years in the Michigan Army National Guard and worked, lived at the fort for 3 years. I would like to see more about the forts history. Especially about the German POWs that where their. There is a small cemetery on post of Germany POW soldiers. I also heard that some of the POWs stayed in the U.S after the war ended.

I'm sure there's a good story behind this, like a sudden surge in attendance for the museum, and visitors stating that a heavy metal band made them curious about history.
