Why are bridle straps needed? Sebastian Erard introduced the double repetition action in the grand piano in 1821, and "=" Robert Wornum - the tape check action in upright piano in 1826. Robert Wornum constructed your the first upright piano in 1811. J. Hawkins about 1800 and J. Schmidt in 1780 - those upright pianos and the first Wornum's piano (1811) didn't have it yet of bridle straps (tape check action) just as old pianoforte in 18th and some oldest in 19th centuries didn't have double repetition too. "(...)The value of this tape lies mainly in the slight extra pull it manages to impart to the hammer butt when the hammer rebounds from the string, and after the back check has caught the hammer and been released by the release of the key. The tape would not have any special. value but for the fact that the hammer, having' been caught by the back check, naturally would hang a little on the release thereof, if it did not receive the gentle pull caused by the fall of the wippen with which the bridle tape connects it. The tape is, in fact, to the upright action what the repetition lever is to the grand. Until these two features had been devised and applied to their corresponding actions, the piano was an extremely imperfect instrument." The upright piano from 1826 and after "(...) owes its present touch effect to the tape just as the touch delicacy of the grand is due to the repetition lever. Of course the grand action is the mor~ delicate and responsive of the two, for it possesses the double repetition. This the upright cannot have, not to mention the fact that the fall of the hammer through gravity is of course far more effective than its retraction by springs. The upright action blocks more easily than does the grand, and finger movement must be higher to secure repetition." The second function of ribbons is "(...)to keep the levers up, and to prevent the jacks getting caught beneath the notches, when the action is removed from the piano and replaced."

The end of the bridle strap on my piano (located on G6) is hitting the back check on the Ab5 (next note over) and is making a squeaking sound and nudging the next note. It’s a console piano. How do I fix this?

I happen to have acquired an old bosendorfer which appears black but one can see that it was painted over. In any case it was pretty banged up, plus it was exposed to a leaking roof, so the finish was badly damaged. I had it painstakingly filed down to the wood which is rather nice, I would say mahogany on the lighter side. the question now is what to do to get the finish on it. I am leaning toward beeswax. I don't like hard core chemicals and I am not going to send it to a car bodyshop to have polyester high gloss....How do you feel about a beeswax finish once the wood has been smoothed and cleaned?

Obviously there is no way for a consumer to inspect a pin block as it sits under the cast iron plate of a grand piano, but are there signs that are indicative to a bad pin block?

I believe the digital piano action is "heavier" because there are no dampers, so what if you measure the acoustic pianos without pressing the damper pedal? how it compares then?

Did you inject directly into the center of the hammer? Or did it seem to me? You can't do that either? In the place where the hammer directly touches the string

A few years ago I decided I wanted to give myself the present of a lifetime for my 65th birthday, a white baby grand piano. Now, I don’t play, never had a lesson, but like all retirees, this was my “someday I will”. I did a little research, quickly learned Stilwell was the best resource. I called and spoke to Michael himself. I explained my desires. I told him all I really wanted to do was look at the beautiful piece of furniture and so I did not really want to spend more than $15,000. Michael jumped right in with,” we can do something for a lot less than that and put in a self player as well. I am pretty sure we have something in the back of the warehouse, I will ask my brother to look right away.” He called me back a bit later apologizing that the one he had in mind was not white but off white, he was bringing it into the showroom and taking pictures if I was interested. I fell in love (the piano was terrific as well). Skip to the end, Michael looked at a satellite image of my house saying there were no impediments to easy delivery ; a father, son delivery team came out and set it up at a very reasonable price and I have been happy as a pre teen with his first bike ever since. I have even been taking lessons with an outstanding computer site that hears what you play and corrects. P.S. and unexpected side benefit, when folks come to visit, the piano makes one heck of a statement. It seems to give an impression that I am quite intelligent, have great taste, and am a bit bougie while I am really only one of those. Thanks Michael from the bottom of my bougie heart.

How common is it for people to use an electronic tuner with a magnetic pickup instead of a microphone? At home I use a Korg tuner I bought recently but haven't tried anything but the internal microphone.
@thepianotechnicianacademy95604 ай бұрын
Honestly, not very common at all... Usually we just use the mics in the ETD.
@DeadHorse6664 ай бұрын
@@thepianotechnicianacademy9560 There's a product called piano sense that claims to be a sensor for more accurate tuning where the line doesn't wiggle much and outside noise doesn't interfere but I think it's just a sub $20 magnetic pickup hyper inflated to $600 since that's the kind of results I get from testing it with my brother's guitar and the seller uses manipulative and vague language that doesn't clearly tell how it works which wouldn't happen if they weren't hiding something. If it's uncommon for people to use that as a method to assist with tuning, I see why most people will likely fall for it until a lot of people start covering it.

My hammers often get stuck when I play the keys slowly, it might be due to the rain causing the wood to swell up thereby not giving enough space for the spring recoil. But I don’t know, please help me if possible
@thepianotechnicianacademy95606 ай бұрын
If you are experiencing a lot of rain, you are probably right. Humidity can swell the wood parts causing them to be sluggish in motion. You can call a Registered Piano Technician to service the piano but most will advise that you adjust the humidity in the room first if you are above 50%...
