Question for you, do trucks in usa have heated mirrors. In Australia we have heated mirrors on our big trucks. Not sure if they would melt snow but we get heavy fog and freezing nights and they keep the glass clear for that. We have a switch in the dash and i guess an element in the backs of the mirrors, it does get quite warm.
@user-lz7qf9tb2t2 ай бұрын
Hi, and to answer your question. Heated mirrors are available. Now, whether a company or owner is willing to pay for them depends on case by case. And also have a switch to turn them on and off at any time. Now in my video the truck I have been issued for this trip does have heated mirrors. Unfortunately the driver side isn't working but the passenger side does. The heated option is turned off at the time of the video. The weather conditions had the authorities close the road for several days. Didn't really need to turn them on. Thus the snow build up. Okay be safe out there, and keep rolling.

@TheRealFlyingAnt2 ай бұрын
@@rickolson6826 not too bad. Maybe a couple inches. Trucks are still stuck in both lanes since last night. It gets much worse just a few miles south. Lots of vehicles crashed or stuck. There was a fire and there is a tree downed on the road. If you go on cal trans, you can see that there are no trucks or cars on any cams as the roads are still severely snowy and iced.

@@rickolson6826 yeah, I won’t chain either haha. I chained last year, but my company doesn’t pay me for doing it and it’s back breaking work on a semi. I also almost got hit last year by a careless trucker as well. I decided I won’t chain again unless forced to. I haven’t told my dispatch this yet. Does your company not care if you decline to chain? Or are you OO?

Question from a non trucker: How do you park into a spot like that on a rainy night when visibility is poor?
@user-lz7qf9tb2t2 ай бұрын
Like any old day. You get out and look to make sure you don't take out anything. Its just part of trucking. But to be perfectly honest, once a driver locks down the procedure, it's easy. No more than a minute and / or a pull-up to get it in the hole. Great question. Be safe and keep rolling.

When you must drop in a certain row and only one slot with no room to stand between the trailers to wind dolly wheels (?) down. Wind em down just before the fronts of next trailers finish backing in and go on your knees to finish winding them down.

So while he's straightening up the cab it doesnt change the angle of the trailerwhile its in the hole?
@user-lz7qf9tb2t9 ай бұрын
It will not if you maneuver small increments at a time. Move up 2-3 feet forward, then move 2-3 feet in reverse. Do not move forward 5,6 feet. That will definitely change angle on the trailer. Small short movements while straightening the cab

As a new driver just about to get my CDL I find it extremely perplexing how drivers manage to get a 53 footer into such tight spots. I look forward to gaining the skills one day hopefully. I really hope I find some mentorship through willing & experienced truckers to take me under their wing and give me the guidance. 🙏 hopefully I will

SHORT STORY-When I first started, I spent 45 minutes trying to back into a dock, stressed, sweating, crying, the whole deal...A driver with a stretched out Pete, pulled up and backed in as smooth as butter...I watched him closely...I learned a valuable lesson that day, he went SLOW!!! The slower you go, the easier it is. 20 years later, I have never forgot! This video is a PERFECT tutorial!!

Remember that the farther your tandems are back the less turning radius you have. So when you have to slide your tandems all the way back at the shipper, the turning radius is much larger. The trailer is going to react differently in every position. I see a lot of newer drivers over steering because they don't understand this. Remember that the slower you go, the better. When you have people waiting for you, they can just wait. We all started somewhere. I was fortunate enough to have a job backing in boats in as a kid. If you have any specific questions. Let me know. Good Luck and be safe trucker. 🙏

Maybe I'm wrong, but it looks like both drivers came in close correctly, but the difference was that the 1st driver held his initial hard turn to the right too long, which limited his space, and led to him being too close to the trucks on his blindslide?
