The set isn’t gonna affect standard much at all but it was needed cause with standard not rotating as much anymore they couldn’t let the set keep coming out at the same power levels as the previous sets otherwise it’d be to close to moderns power level back in like 2016. I think this is gonna be the trend we’ll see the power level of sets slow all around they realized people don’t like super powerful cards it’s great for selling cards at the beginning but when people start playing and they gotta ban cards with each new set people hate that. They don’t want the formats to break every new set they want them the have change but not break. Also standard is much to fast like the games are decide turns 4-8 now unless you play control that’s the speed modern use to be now modern is 3-6

My take on the grading system is to bring back Ds! 0 /feels/ like an F, no matter how many times you say it isn't, so I think most 0s should be D-tier cards. A way of saying, this card doesn't matter, but it's not necessarily unplayable.

I think the "new" grading scale would be great for a writtem document where you include which archtypes you think the card will be included in, but it doesn't lend itself well to the audio format.

Swords to Plowthroughs

Think y'all are underrating the izzet cards quite a lot. They are linear but they are also powerful on their own and both of its signposts - the removal spell and the vehicle are just excellent cards that do everything the deck wants. I don't know if they'll always come together but there's lots of blue cards which incidentally cycle and cards like that 1/4 which burns the opponent when you discard that support the archetype well. Its also got the best rares I think of the rares that clearly support draft archetypes. The shark captain and the 3/3 haste draw three discard 2 means your deck's gonna have loads of velocity. If every creature you drop gets killed by a removal spell then that's one thing, but any of them remaining unanswered means that a well built deck's going to make them huge and powerful. As well as being able to draw out of tricky situations better than the other decks can. The 1 mana cycling vehicle looks terrible until you read it as 1 mana draw a card pump the team, at instant speed. Also seems like the kind of deck which supports crazy bomb uncommon buildarounds like the big 7 mana mass reanimate mounts and vehicles. Idk I think the format's going to be slower than y'all thing which means that this as an aggro deck is going to be well positioned.

a creature that can only crew or saddle and gives the team 0/+1....for 4 mana. yeah i dont think that really sells it i suppose the vigilance could allow you to attack an also crew stuff on defense, thats like not bad. but iduno, it just doesnt seem good enough if it was like 2 mana, yeah i could see this being a real card. as is, ehh, im gonna pass

i think even ethan is too low on burner rocket after being talked down by ben. i like the take of that it takes 4 words to describe it. format-all star rimrock knight indeed. i think it's a top common. maybe even a B- to me.

Hey guys, very timely video and a very difficult format to assess I think. Do you guys think that this set is a secret 3-color set? Gainlands at common and the 3-color mechanic overlap (mardu engines, esper artifacts, temur exhaust, etc) scream secret 3-color to me. But it also looks to be fairly fast, which generally means 2c.

I’m just excited for set content that isn’t screeching into the void about Hot Wheels Set Bad, I can’t wait for this

I think cloudspire skycycle is for sure a B. If you have any white or red cards you are highly likely to pick it up. I feel like the letter/number grade kind of falls apart when talking about multicolor cards. It’s almost like y’all are trying to mash up two different scales: one being versatility in number of decks, and the other being raw power like A or B.

I am mid on gastal raider simply because of the benefit of seeing opponents hand.

I think it will be a battle between the full speed ahead aggro decks and the control value engines for sure. Prerelease will see way more aggro than usual I am thinking, and I am hoping for a nice control sealed pool

You keep saying that cards that can damage the opponent are "great at starting your engine". They are not. They are great at raising your speed. Only cards that have "Start your engines" can start your engine, i.e., start your speedometer. Raising the speed is a whole different story.

Love the conversation the # system creates but ‘Pick order mattering’ vs ‘# of decks this goes in’… please pick one. Having a card be a 2 or a 0 based on pick order is confusing. Personally I like # = # of decks definition because 1) sealed and 2) arena drafters under value cards anyway 3) im assuming these are all C level picks, otherwise they’d be getting a letter grade.

Also the confusion between a 4 and a zero because the card will be easy to get takes away from the number valuation.

I enjoy y'all's content so please take this feedback as coming from a fan: This grading system is capital-H Horrendous. If you're going to discuss the grading reasoning either way, just stick to a 1-10 or A-F or any normal system that isn't some bizarre, inscrutable hybrid.

I think you guys might be overvaluing “start your engines” on cards 3MV and higher. Casting spells with it doesn’t increase your speed unless you haven’t started it in the first place, so it’s far more valuable on cheaper spells.

I think one of the problems of doing a number system is you spend so much time thinking "which deck wants this the most" and not enough time thinking "is this card worth playing at all." For example, rating a 2 mana 3/3 a 1 because it has artifact synergy, or rating a 1 mana +1/+1 and vigilance aura a 4(?)

10:38 I recognize a take that will age like milk when I see one. 58:40 It is weird that you like Velocitaur but not Rocket which is a 2 mana instant for the same effect. 1:24:55 Ethan is right, the best version is discarding and reanimating it. I think your vehicles don't matter take will age like Rooms don't matter.
