memories. surfed the tubes in the 70's while studying Marine Biology at UPE. Also worked as a fisherman on 'oom Baard''s boat on weekends for pocket money.. they were open boats with a 1300 corsair engine and direct prop shaft. The engine was so weak we had to swim the boat through the surf. He charged R3 for a spot and then bought your fish from you. You could pick one for dinner. Generally made R30 a weekend, which was serious money back then.

@@StinkGoggaStokeisnojoke i had a 2.5l Opel Ranger and i budgeted R11 for petrol from PE to JHB. it was 33c per gallon - for the younger generation thats about 7cents a liter. Fishing was HARD work. you worked 2 lines with 2 hooks each. bait, pull in, bait pull in. constantly for 8-12 hours at a time. Every fisherman had a bin behind him for his fish. Best was if you caught a shark - lots of kilos. Oom Baard sold those to I&J who used it as a filler for fish cakes. But not a Johnson's Black Tip shark, the meat was rancid with these little black glands all over. memories my friend.. good old days. Now i live across the world. far from home.
