I didn't realise Pleyel harpsichords got such negative press until I read KZbin comments. If it looks like a harpsichord and sounds like a harpsichord, then it is a harpsichord. Practically every other musical instrument used in Western music has been given a 19th and 20th century makeover, so why not a harpsichord? At least this one won't need retuning every ten minutes. The next step in its evolution is an overstrung one.

Bravissimo! and what a remarkable harpsichord. Why on earth should instruments of this type not be manufactured again? What is wrong with expanding the tonal possibilities of the harpsichord through pedals, or of thinking of the harpsichord as an organ with strings? One thing I should like to experience is a recital featuring both but Pleyel and a good contemporary harpsichord. Absent such a recital, it is hard to judge the true resonance of the Pleyel; but it does seem to possess extraordinary carrying power and sostenuto. Mr. Klosiewicz is, of course, a phenomenal musician and a great virtuoso. Too many "modern" harpsichords play like mayflies by comparison.

My 1st Exposure to the harpsichord was over 50 years ago as a young keyboard student.I heard a recording by Wanda Landowsky. The sound of what she played thrilled me.At the time I didn't know that what she was playing was not an historically accurate instrument. However I do not believe that without her recording and her love of this keyboard instrument we would have seen a revival of the repertoire and the music for the harpsichord It is historical configuration. This is a fine performance and a good tribute To the master Wanda Landowsky.

So that's how that old monstrosity sounds like in a modern recording! All i got before for reference were the old mono recordings by landowska that sounded like they were recorded inna bathtub. Now, fire up that 16' register! LOL!

People criticize these harpsichords as being unhistorical (and, of course, they are), but these Pleyel instruments and Wanda Landowska's extraordinary performances on them brought the harpsichord back from the dustbin of history. For that we enthusiasts of the harpsichord and of early music should be eternally grateful!

well very miss understood! pretty much all of the modern harpsichord replica's are based on relatively small everyday harpsichords the upper lower class used with a relatively small scale and case the super upper class yes even royal had a different instrument at their proposal of a super scale and size much more akin to the pleyels Raphael Puyana had several of these upper-class harpsichords just compare what his's harpsichords sounded like compared to the Pleyel!

People might also criticize them for sounding dead, unresonant and mechanical in comparison with most historically-based instruments. Which isn't exactly much to be grateful for.

I agree. Let everybody enjoy the historical context and the sound that he/she likes best. There is no good or wrong in these matters. I love the sound of the Pleyel as well as the more 'authentic' historical approaches. They all have their valuable contribution in keeping that wonderful sound alive.
