Every time I see this video I just have to rewatch it! Just incredible. That sound the bean makes when she lands every time is just so satisfying, like even the beam knows she landed nicely

Brilliant! I wish the routines today were like this! They just don't have the 'character' of previous years! I hope I explained that right. I miss former skills that aren't done anymore. Also, the leotards are TOO Skimpy and are TOO flashy! Yes, be a little sparkly but NOT like you're on DWTS or a figure skater!!!! Sorry! I guess I just prefer the 'old school class of gymnastics! Shawn was amazing! I will always love her routines! Thank you for sharing this great video! 👏❤🎉

Before this competition, Shannon Miller (1996, Atlanta) was the only American to ever win individual event gold on beam in the Olympics. Through the 2024 Paris Olympics, no others have since. Not even Simone Biles. It is still a tiny club of two, Shannon and Shawn!!

Wow that was the highest score given at the Olympics in balance beam finals 16.25 with 7.00 difficulty is super impressive I don’t remember any other gymnasts got this score ever she’s a the goat 🐐 8 years later Seane Weaver from the Netherlands got perfect routine and gold medal 🥇 as well super awesome 😎

It seems like going into the All-around, Shawn was the favored gymnast. Then Nastia swept in and was utterly amazing. BUT what I'll never forget was Shawn standing right there as Nastia clenched the gold and congratulating her immediately. I was impressed that a teenager under so much pressure could be so gracious in defeat.

IMO, this is the start of the transition to the more athletic gymnastics we see today. Loved watching Johnson and Liukin in that era.

Shawn and suni lee this year had similar balance beam routine I have noticed. Well meaning when Shawn Johnson did hers back in 2008 I mean suni lee was kind of similar to Shawn Johnson’s from 2008 Olympics.

She did so many difficult moves, and she looked strong without being overly muscular like today’s gymnasts. I miss the grace and elegance of the gymnasts of the past.

Sorry but she made mistakes. Not worthy of the gold imo. Off her first pass she falters on the landing. Shannon Miller had a perfect performance on the beam in Atlanta.

It's not only 100% perfect routines that win gold every time. This routine has a special something that many people love it for.

@@MeghanMakesaComment-st1st Ya no. A gold winning performance is supposed to equal as close to perfection as possible. Her first tumbling pass she wobbles on the landing very obviously! And that's one of a few where she does that. This is an overrated performance IMO

There's been MANY performances on beam way better than this one. Shannon Miller in '96 to start. Lillia P in Atlanta, etc.

It likely would have still, yes. Some routines have not aged well in terms of connection bonus, but this has. Incredible.

I know scoring is different these days, and thr capabilities of today's athletes are still outstanding and insane. But theres judt something so satisfying about watching old gymnastics videos. They performed the skills so cleanly and fluidly (which must have required more training and caused extra stress), whereas today i feel like moves are okay to be a bit disjointed (not sure if this is the right word). The old way of performing is more visually appealling.
