Your channel hit my feed for the first time today, which is surprising since I've been Portugal-centric for a long time. Ships (of a sort) in the night. I just retired - a year earlier than planned, but I "got retired" from a govt contract that shifted gears. My focus had been on moving to Portugal, but with the demise of the NHR, I've shifted my plans to the southern half of France. France was my original 2012 dream, and Portugal for exploring now is just over the mountains. Making a location scouting trip there in January-February. I know what it's like in summer in my target locales, so I want to see the winter version before committing! I moved away from PHX end of 2016. I miss the hiking and exploring all over the state, including three Big Ditch backpacks. It will be interesting to see your take on it now. I do NOT miss the summers! I look forward to seeing your new stuff. Best of luck in your travels home and onwards!

During 1993 my mother, aged 67 and living with my father in rural New South Wales, had a massive stroke. Rural New South Wales's standards of healthcare were then - and probably still are - abysmally inadequate. It was a 25-minute drive to the nearest hospital, and this was Christmas Day. In other words, there were almost no staffers on duty (even in the emergency section) except the occasional Filipina cleaner with predictably limited ability to communicate in English. Nor were there ambulance teams nearby. Something like half a day elapsed before any doctor saw my mother. For the rest of her life - she died in 2001 - she was unable to speak and almost completely paralyzed, requiring 24/7 nursing-home care. I really didn't need any further incentives to stay as far away from the countryside as possible. But if I had needed such further incentives, the horrific fate of my mother (and of my father, who took his own life six months afterwards, having been diagnosed with incurable cancer) would have provided them.

Congratulations on making yourself happy! Travelers enjoy movement, but I can understand missing your family as well. I’ve enjoyed your content. I think leaving the pandemic video would be a great reference for the time. Maybe combine them in a group and add a note that policies have changed. As an older person, without family in Portugal, it’s just not practical to stay there forever, for many of us. The medical isn’t the best, and there’s very little assistance elderly people. There’s systems in the works to improve this, but it doesn’t exist currently. Anyway, I hope you have a smooth transition moving back home! 🍻

Best of luck to you and your wife! We love your channel and appreciate the informative videos that are succinct and honest. We have been in Lisbon 2.5 years and are in our early 50s. Our oldest is engaged and our younger two are in college. We, too, have always planned to return to the US in order to spend more time with them as adults and be close with their families as that comes along. We plan to continue traveling. Again, thank you for great information and a friendly channel! Cheers!

Sorry to see you are leaving. Portugal is definitely not my forever destination. I am here for 2 more years until I get the citizenship and then I will be gone. I will keep the house here though and come back once a year for a month or so. Good luck with the powerball. I thought you were retired here. In the rural areas almost all expats are. Even I am retired, though only in my early 40's. Thank you Bitcoin. The majority of the people I come across are over 65 (with many around 70) and from the UK. Personally, I think things in Europe are not headed in the right direction. After Portugal, I will go back to Asia. Where exactly, remains to be seen.

Thank you so much for your videos! I've enjoyed your straight forward way of informing us about the pros and cons of living in Portugal. I've neglected to watch your travel videos but will be using them for reference in the future. I plan on moving to Portugal in the near future and use it as a base for getting to know Europe a little better before deciding where to live in the future. I'm subscribed and will be looking forward to more content from you in the future, whatever it may be. Your information without a lot of fluff is a breath of fresh air compared to other content out there. I hope your move is as seamless as possible and you enjoy your life wherever you are.😊

my advice is always the same, buy health insurance, doesn't have to be the best, go to private hospitals for routine anything, using that insurance, and go to public hospitals for any emergencies or anything major, the bigger the hospital the better. also use insurance for dentists. as for a stroke, call 112, the doctor will come to you with the necessary equipment.
