I wouldn't say the Microsynth is a pedal that lends itself to chords it should be played more like a monophonic synth. Although it does depend on the voice mix. If you have octaves on there chords won't work well. If it's being used more as an EQ pedal with the original guitar signal it can work for some chord things.

I really wish you would have hit a couple ACDC riffs, my only reason to buy one is to get closer to their tones. lol. I dont know whether to get the solodallas or the other one, I cant remember its name atm. Does it come with instructions on where to set the knobs for angus and malcom? Sounds closer than Ive ever been straight away, lol. BTW, this is the most thorough video on any product I have ever seen, ever. You do a excellent job my friend.

Don’t care for the ‘full gain clipping’ but really nice video, wave forms are neat. Seems like a clean boost with some compression? Would this be the same pedal as the Storm?

So if I want to get the "Back in Black" tone on my Marshall DSL5 do I plug the pedal into the clean channel or dirty channel and where do I keep the gain on the amp? Nobody has shown this yet even the Solo Dallas Channel.

I recently bought the vintage. I notice that it muffles my clean signal a little just by being in my chain, even when I’m not hitting it. It makes me really sad because when it’s on it’s awesome, especially when I use it as an octave fuzz stacked with my super lead channel. But I just can’t justify having it in my rig when I only use it 5% of the time and my main sound is compromised because of it. Even if it’s the only pedal in my setup! Does anyone else have this issue with the vintage? And does the newer version have this problem too? Does the newer version have true bypass?

Great review Gary! I have a TC Hypergravity that's been on my pedal board for ages but I have only just wrapped my head (and ears) around this Christmas (while learning sultans of swing LOL!). I can get a similar effect as the limiter on this pedal but it takes quite a while to dial in depending on the other variables (amp/guitar) its a bit of a knife edge to get it there, especially for heavier guitar. I now have one of these on they way, seems too be much more tuned to the job! Thanks for the video and taking the time to put the waveforms in and in giving us your insights!

Thanks Danny for your comment much appreciated. Sorry for slow reply I didn't see it until today for some reason! That knopfler clean strat sound def requires a compressor but as you say - it would be a subtle setting. Has the Storm performed better than the TC? The Storm does something different to all compressor/limiter pedals IMO.

I just sold my non-functioning 1980's in 2 minutes on Reverb last night for the price of a new one. But watching this I think I'll pass. The tracking on the new one is wonk! I'll wait for a "braaam" pedal...
@LuMagazine
@LuMagazine 2 жыл бұрын
Went ahead and bought the newer version anyway. It's a lot touchier, but also a lot grittier. I noticed you had to strike the high notes a lot harder and precisely to track properly. But the overall sound is a lot richer than I remember with this one... so yeah, give and take with each...

@@Garyclintoncomposer All octavers sound tinky to me. Like White Stripes. So I use both the EHX & TC Electronic harmonizers for a thick sound. Also the Boss SY-1 synth ain't bad either. That's the thing, I have great braaam files, but they can only be played by keyboards with GarageBand for example. That's what all the musicians who score video games do. Won't work with guitar. I don't want a huge midi modeling set up. I just want a good pedal! Is that so much to ask? I've written half a dozen pedal companies. Nobody gets it! Hans Zimmer should brand one!

This is the problem with any new analog pedal that is/has a filter. The new filters are just nowhere near as good as the ones from the 70's, or in this case the 90's reissue. It's why even the new Mu-Tron reissues, even though they're designed by and who's build is overseen by the same guy who designed and build the original Mu-Trons just don't "cutnthe mustard." The filters just aren't as good. The last truly _great_ analog filters in pedal form were on the Moogerfoogers from the 2000's. What makes the situation even shitter in regard to older EHX pedals - they sound _fantastic_ but eventually the parts go bad and they're difficultto find someonewhocan repair them. Especially in the Microsynths. If you can get one, a company call _Iron Ether_ made a pretty awesome filter called the _Xerograph Deluxe_ that rivals the _Moogerfooger Low Pass Filter_ pedal. You can also contr the filter with an expression pedal and it has a small form factor.
@Garyclintoncomposer
@Garyclintoncomposer 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this I have always fancied a moogerfooger and never got round to picking one up so will check out the Xerograph. And yes I agree on the older filters. Always seems to come down to old adage - the vintage gear is the best.

Nice work, man, and well played. I’ve had this pedal for a while and initially wasn’t impressed with it because my instincts were to keep the Gain low and use the Boost to get volume where I wanted it. However that approach presents a lot of hiss. Revisited it today and figured out that I should ignore the knob labels and just find a setting that sounds good. Now I’m loving it with Gain on about 9/10, Boost about 3/10 and Limiter about 4/10.
@Garyclintoncomposer
@Garyclintoncomposer 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Brent! Absolutely RE playing around with settings until it gives you what you want. I think with low gain you're missing out on that 'secret sauce' part of the pedal as the boost is just volume. Although it is clean boost... but if you are using a high gain amp and other pedals etc it will boost any hiss that is inherintly there.

@Garyclintoncomposer

Thanks very much I'm glad you like it. In a word, no! (I've tried it!) I guess it's all about the specific components, the voicing of the gain stage & the specific nature of the limiter. Cool video. Yeah, the new one sounds kind of crappy, if I'm being frank. I wonder if its the headroom being squished to 9v from 24v? That's how I feel about the 90's DMM vs. newer ones, I don't think it's as picky as the internal components as much as it is just not having as much room to breathe. (?) Anyway, dig the riffs and your use of the synth.
@Garyclintoncomposer
@Garyclintoncomposer 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree RE room to breathe on the older one. It's definitely more 'toppy' and perhaps that just makes it all seem more compressed and clinical rather than feeling a bit warmer like the older one. Glad you liked the video and if you liked the riff here is the song I used it in. I used the 90s one but I did have EQ and compression in the chain too kzbin.info/www/bejne/h3iuiaCae72qd6M
