He’ll slowly climb up the field, until eventually fighting with Kouki and Michael, where he’ll ultimately finish second.

(complete spoilers, you've been warned) his father dies at lap 3 of the race, and suddenly Kanata stops feeling any pain at all. Right as the R8 was gonna overtake he shifts into 2nd, and takes off. He overtakes every single car up the field all the way up to Koki and Micheal but doesn't have much front tire grip anymore left to fight them effectively, however as they scrap before the last corner Kanata takes the advantage and finishes 2nd ahead of Koki and behind Micheal. It is explained his father gave him strength to not feel pain as he passed away (absolute bullshit imo but the race is gonna be fire)

I can't say anything without major spoilers, but this handicap was a very obvious attempt at temporary nerfing Kanata until like lap 3 or something, and how he explained his recovery was total bullshit lol
