This is a torch song and Ida Lupino nails it like the amazing actress she is. This was the first version I ever heard of it and still my favorite.

Sturges wrote to Newman: ''I'm just overwhelmed by what you did for me!'' (See Criterion commentary.) Rex, who was left handed and had to memorise the strokes and the music, worked for hours on it - and was under another impression: Damned Serious Business, page 94: ''The problem with this was that I had to learn how to conduct an orchestra, and though I am reasonably musical, I had no idea how to set about such a task. Fortunately I had a marvellous young English conductor, Robin Sanders-Clark, as my coach (note: he seems to have been an actor and really is in the credits as to have coached him), and he must have done wonders with me, for, at the end of filming, the orchestra revealed that, though rightly sceptical about my musicianship to begin with, they had actually followed my beat as the film went on, as if I were their real conductor! I was immensely touched, especially when they ganged up and wrote a 'Harrison Fanfare' for me, to commemorate their 'amazement and delight' in what they called my 'histrionic feat'.'' Fanfare works as a gag too: fanfaron, braggart, swaggerer - which, among others, mean: showy, arrogant individual who confidently thinks is very important - with 'histrionic' meaning excessively theatrical and melodramatic, as in: concerning acting. So, it may have been either an honest tribute - or a joke from the pit, tooting his own horn, but from his perspective, a touching kudos to an actor. Who knows! ...

2:26 Pecos Bill is pretty strong for a guy with lean muscle mass. He’s taking out the rustlers with a one punch knockout.

Great movie - Red River with all great actors. Tom Tyler is buried in Mt. Olivet - Detroit, Michigan and he had many heavy weight lifting records that held for 14 years. My dad worked across the street from the cemetery and a few co-workers attended his burial. Tom Tyler also played in Stagecoach with John Wayne. Thanks for sharing your video.

Tom Tyler was an amateur weightlifter sponsored by the Los Angeles Athletic Club during the late 1920s. He set a new world's amateur record for the right-hand clean and jerk by lifting 213 pounds (97 kg). In 1928, he won the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) heavyweight weightlifting championship, lifting 760 pounds (340 kg)-a record that stood for fourteen years

Just read an article about Jimmy Stewart and how this role was his first departure from his wholesome 'Aw shucks!' leading man persona. I haven't seen this movie in full yet, but I'm very intrigued and can't wait.

Stewart’s character is such a massive hypocrite at the end of the movie when he reprimands the murderers when he’s seriously invested in these ideas like he is here.

Erm. I’m not sure if you understand the film at all, especially Jimmy Stewart’s final monologue.

theres an extended version of his speech in the novelisation where he takes a bit more accountability lol, but yeah i wish he’d acknowledged his role in it a little more, brandon obviously did it to impress him

0:57. I'm assuming that in order for Disney to have been allowed to make that Superman reference by nicknaming Pecos Bill the Western Superman, they had to get permission from DC, or what would later become DC.

In the song's passage: I still can picture the flowers in the showers And that picnic in July And I still Treasure each and every hour Of those years that had to fly, is the same melody, as in Mel Tormen's A Christmas song, in the passage: They know that Santa's on his way He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh And every mother's child is gonna spy To see if reindeers really know how to fly
