Sadly we have Thomas Jefferson (multilingual) to blame. You should have listened to Ben Franklin who insisted on two official national languages: French (a universal diplomatic language, at the time) and ENGLISH! Think about it if we go and live in a foreign country do we not need to know that language? Yes.
