Great video again. Question 1: When are you getting the HEV? You know you want to ! ;) It interesting how the different models have some of the same features but the buttons are in different places eg seat heating, difflocks etc. At time 21:00, in 4Low it performs much better. But it has nothing to do with the traction control system. I think rather it has to do with the central differential that gets locked in 4L. Having tested my HEV Ultra recently, I have found thus far that the traction control system is OK (as in average) in terms of how fast it reacts. But does it need a perfct TC system when one has difflocks? The RR Evoque I had, had an incredibly fast TC system. (Strangely, even faster than the newer Disco Sport) See here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fmmQfZSJba-qmbssi=AzGrBdDvPRlld1NQ In this case without difflocks, a good TC system is a must.

Thanks! Look the HEV Ultra would be the best to get, with that extra grunt and alll the features. But, it was 100k more. I hope they one day do an update to the infotainment to give different dials and features as China models have them. The TC on my petrol using the Pothhole mode is very quick. Watching your video, I would say its as quick as your Evoque.id love to do a video with a few SUV's testing the TC specifically. Would be very interesting. Thanks for watching and being subscribed 😀

@TankDrive300 Ah, that's great then that the Petrol Ultra has the pothole mode that's quick then. Should help the Lux spec that doesn't have the difflocks. If you look through my videos, you'll see some vids of when myself and a few of the guys on the 4x4 community forum did a softroader shootout and did exactly that, to test out the TC systems on the various softies. Was really fun. There's a few things that I wish I had on my HEV ultra, that only the petrol has. To me, I prefer less gears. I also wish I had the extra space for all the straps and ropes etc in the compartment where the battery now sits. I'd also like the possibility of only 2 wheel drive. I like fooling the kids and family that we're stuck, when we're really not :) But the extra grunt around town is addictive, and overtaking is safer when you need it. One has to be aware though that the sudden shove is quite violent (even for the same throttle input) when one changes to Sport. So much so, that you need to rather want to change to Sport after you've stepped out from the vehicle you're overtaking, lest you drive into the back of it! Seriously. Will need to find the time to put up some videos of the fun we had recently in the dunes in Atlantis. I can send you some rough cut ones if you like. I think I sent you my number in a PM on the forum.

@TankDrive300

Hey, yes it's the Ultra with front locker. There is a sand mode in 4H which I didn't use, as I prefer 4L. There is a speed limit for 4L, I think its 50 or 60km/h. I think the Super Lux is HEV? The 4wd systems are different, as the Sup Lux is AWD and it's sand mode is in AWD = 4H. Most manufacturers have sand mode in 4H. So you can use 4L but it will limit wheel spin which is not ideal for sand driving.

Also looking to put some nice tekkies on. Still deciding on 285/70/17's or 285/65/18's (both equate to 33" ) Going to take a slow 8 day trip back to JNB.

For offroading, the bigger the sidewall is, the better so in this case the 17 would be better than the 18 inch especially if you not going a much bigger overall tyre diameter. If you going to a 33 inch tyre with 18 inch rim, that would be fine also as there is enough sidewall to not be a concern offroad. Also, I think there may be more options for 17's. You'll enjoy that drive up. The Tank is really a comfortable luxury vehicle. Cheers

@TankDrive300 I think you are right WRT to options and availability. But its all about that balance between looks, on road ability, off road ability, etc. For me, the 18 inch just looks right. But at this stage, it will go down to taking what i can get this time of year and what the dealer can /is willing to organise regarding the trading in of the std Michelins.

I've got 13L/100km for city driving and 9.6L/100km for highway for my non hybrid tank 300. Fuel economy aside, the response and power delivery from the engine is far better than any 4 cylinders diesel engine on dual cab utes that I've been driving in the last 12 years as a work car.

I asked ChatGPT to do a calculation for how much more fuel the bigger knobbly tires will add by calculating the added rolling resistance and tyre weight and diameter. It said it could add up to 2 litres per 100, in stop start conditions. So, if we subtract that, we'd likely sit at 14 l/100 urban and closer to 11 ish for highway. Some get 10.5. So I'm thinking of going back to a less aggressive A/T tyre and slightly smaller size

I bought my Ultra knowing it wasn't going to be an economic vehicle compared to a similar diesel SUV. If I towed heavy loads over long distances, then the diesel sadly becomes necessary, but I don't so it's not. I do however get to enjoy the quiet refinement without the smelly toxic exhaust or high maintenance costs of a diesel so it's a compromise that I am very happy to make. It would be interesting to compare total cost of ownership including maintenance between petrol and diesel. I have owned one diesel in my life, and it was the most unreliable and expensive to maintain. The petrol Tank is happy to run on 93 which already about 7% less than diesel in SA. You only have to look at diesel vehicle sales in Europe to see that it is a dying technology, even if the mainstream 4x4 community are in denial about it so I have no doubt that the diesel Tank will outsell the petrol and HEV models in SA and maybe Australia but in no other country. Regardless of engine type it is an excellent vehicle, and I am very happy that I decided to buy instead of going with the flow. PS. Reminder me what type of engine the new Wrangler uses?😉
@TankDrive300
@TankDrive300 Ай бұрын
I 100% agree. It is such a smooth and refined driving experience with the petrol. That I enjoy a lot. As for maintenance and longevity, Petrol will win. Less issues with DPF, EGT and dirty diesel stuffing up injectors. And, the new Fortuner is coming out with a mild hybrid petrol!

But what if the vehicle only has a rear locker? You'd want/need the front axle to have good TC to crawl up a rock in front of the wheel, not so? Therefore using the correct terrain mode is important otherwise that front wheel will just be pushing into it and rear locked wheels be spinning. If you have a front locker too (quite rare) then yes, use it and be unstoppable 😁

As a young engineer, some 30 years ago, whenever I had a problem I couldn’t solve and called a senior one, they’d simply say RTFM! Never forgotten it and still apply it today. Regarding 4WDing, I grew up with zero tech aids and had the manually operated locks on each wheel. Getting to know any vehicle you own is key. Regarding motor journalists, they get very limited time in each vehicle and as a result need to make a more generalised summary and most that I’ve watched regarding this vehicle have been very positive. So on that front I’m not sure what you’re complaining about with all of this in mind. Hence the joy of having KZbin and being able to hear others thoughts and opinions. Like some journalists, you also forgot what mode you had it in in at least one section of post editing. One vehicle compared to several more that the journalists need to do. Apart from that, nice job.

Hi Marcus, thank you for the feedback. You are right, most of the reviews have been favorable, but there has been one by Cars.co.za that got it "stuck" and had to be recovered. Be that as it may, as a reviewer, people look to them to decide if they should buy a vehicle. If the reviewer doesn't use the right settings in a situation, it can make the vehicle look inferior and dissuade potential buyers. Some journalists actually say, they don't want a handover or read the manual as they want to see how easy the vehicle is to use. Silly in my view. To get the best out of anything, you need to rtfm IMHO 😅

GWM Tank 300 exhibits cost-cutting measures in the construction. Flimsy wiring under the backseat and disorganised wiring in the engine bay leave much to be desired. Also, GWM has not problems to drastically reduce pricing to current models to make way for the new models, thereby reducing your resale value by, as in my case, 40% overnight.
@TankDrive300
@TankDrive300 2 ай бұрын
Fiar comments, however all manufacturers have accused of cost cutting at some point of their various models. So, not a standout point re Tank. What matters is its sturdy construction as proven in this video and others where people have rolled the vehicle, but the structure is sold. As for resale value, perhaps but I am yet to see actual data on this. Or do you have to share?

@@TankDrive300 The comment is for Namibia and not Australia. I just drove the Tank 300 and it was amazing. However, on seeing the flimsy and chaotic wiring it leaves me doubtful about the design philosophy from GWM. At the same time, while I was in the process of purchasing the Tank, I was informed that my H6 had dropped its resale value by more than 40% in 2 years, basically overnight. I obviously did not buy the Tank or for that matter any other GWM car ever again.
