Going far too slow. I used to “surf” waves like these on a 46 foot yacht. Going directly downwind you needed to be extremely focused on the forestay relative to the mainland to get onto the helm instantly. Should you allow the bow to go either way you will “broach” going from max to zero in 0.5 sec, risking potential dismasting or damage. It helps if the yacht has a decent sized rudder, as certain positions on the wave minimises rudder depth, hence very much less control. If been in many broaches but never when I was on the helm. Never ever allow an inexperienced sailor on the helm heavy directly downwind conditions. Those were the days. Sadly my body is Kaput now. 8.5m fall from a ladder kind of writes your body off.

@@westcoastrippers9862 being in a broach is not fun, with the deck near vertical and keel almost out of the water. It’s not uncommon when the yacht (monohull) gets the “death roll”…that is mast swinging side to side with the motion of the waves, it’s at that point the yacht is most vulnerable to “rounding up into the wind”, aka broach. Bloody dangerous as the mainsail boom could gybe across the deck at a zillion miles per hour…too bad if you are in the way. I was lucky in that reguard, but unfortunately I had a very heavy roughly 5m stainless steel spinnaker pole dong me on the head…I was on the verge of blacking out…vision went for a few seconds, but I was fine. Rookie sailor instead of “easing” the topping lift just took it off the winch!!!

Bit of an easterly breeze makes it bit flatter ,little day boats must be pretty over the westerly weather pattern days pretty few and far apart to be able to get out.👍

Everybody giving kudos but actually the last wave is nearly disastrous as the boat has been steered slightly sideways vs the surf after the captain let up on the thrust...

I know nothing about bar crossings in a boat and I might be wrong but as a surfer with decades of wave experience it feels like I can see exactly what that skipper is doing with each wave and his boat's capability and it looks like chef's kiss perfection to me. Acceleration, angle (not too much to roll, not too straight to catch it either), deceleration, lose the wave, steady up, repeat.

I wish someone would do videos of the mouth of the Fraser river where, at certain points of wind and tide, standing waves can be up to 10 feet high and run for 2 km. There's no point of land to film from though.
