as a youth coach for rec and competitive programs, I found your comments to be spot on with the tendency towards priority focus on early developers and the struggle with keeping less developed players in the game and practice sessions. Coming up with definitions of what success can look like during a practice session or game for each particular athlete can be challenging but important to keep them looking forward for more significant accomplishments. Stronger faster players are reminded that those are relative qualities depending on their competition and that fundamentals and other skills will help them compete against the inevitable faster/stronger competition. I prefer to cover these concerns at the outset, when the season training begins.

They are out and go to another basket to do another shooting drill. Also depends on numbers...Last week, we had 2-player teams on one basket and 3-player teams on the other basket, so when a 3-player team was eliminated, I had them split up and join the 2-player teams and continue. So, I find a way for them to continue shooting despite being knocked out of the game.

It's just a basic warmup...first few are just dribble around. Not sure what they all were going in a circle. Think it's mostly young girls having fun/being funny. Then we switched the movements, skips, shuffles. When I yelled stop, they jump stopped with the ball. There was one where every time they passed another player face to face, they passed their balls to each other. Another was like a follow the leader where the last person had to sprint ahead to the front when i said switch. It's primarily just a way to get them moving and dribbling the ball.

I have been using the Serbian Shooting drill for a few years now and think it is the best shooting drill I have ever seen to replicate game-like shooting. A few things I have changed that I suggest coaches try: 1. We play in teams so that it is competitive. 2. It is a timed event: each team is on offense for 3-5min then switches (if you have an extra player, he rotates in on offense after each bucket for the shooter). 3. Defense can score points - 1 pt for a tip, 2pts for a steal. (tip then a steal would be 3pt play) this keeps the defense trying for the full 3 min. Because our office uses passing and relocating, you can only get the pass back once you have a paint touch after a pass, then fill it out somewhere else.

This is my zone go to: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6nbaKaDhZ2Nj7M Basic idea is to create an advantage for the first pass. Four high should create an opening vs 2 or 3 defenders. Ultimately the goal we want is to create the 2v1 in the key or move defenders from their zone to create a wide open C&S 3.

You can see the cone by the volleyball line and the lane line. Imagine a line from sideline to sideline through that cone, and a line from baseline to half court through that cone, and the same on the right side of the court. That creates six rectangles.

I use 3v3 hockey and 2v2 rugby a lot with my 5/6 grade team. One of our struggles is to matchup on defense in the front court and I think it may be because the players are struggling to scan the court effectively. Do you think allowing them to trap in the front court is developmentally appropriate to improve the player’s ability to scan the court? Do you have any suggestions for other small-sided games to help players matchup on defense?

@@eriklyall2108 Maybe Tip Transition would help as there is the uncertainty of offense or defense...also, 3v3 in HC with our playmakers rules (similar to FIBA3X3) with no checks force the quick pick up or the other team is shooting or making a pass out then in for a layup. 1v1 from half court. have to get two feet in the paint (doesn't always happen). once attacker gets inside the three-point line, corners cut. player in the key steps up and stops the ball or doubles the passer. pass to one side. other side defends the shot. It's primarily to practice accurate passing off the dribble under pressure.

With younger players, I've removed the on-ball defender. player attacks, defender in paint must stop ball and attacker makes an accurate pass. one catches and finishes, the other defends. can also do it with stationary players on the block waiting for the pass to catch, pivot and score.

On such a long closeout she should've never used that type of choppy step closeout, also the idea is you run closer, then choppy steps leaning slightly backwords then use momentum to jump to contest.
