6:05 yea, then abandoned in 1933. It was a giant gravel path for about 40 years, then in 1970, it was opened for BN. BN used it until 1977 when they abandoned it between Orenco and Forest Grove. The rest of the right of way along Bowers Jct and through DT Beaverton was abandoned in 1995 for MAX service
@subwaymark7 сағат бұрын
I didn't realize there was a time the track was not in use before MAX. I thought the track from Hillsboro to Forest Grove was still in use during MAX time as it was connected to the SP Tillamook Bay branch. They probably abandoned the line between Orenco Jct (the connection of the former United Railways) to Hillsboro in 1977. The track from Hillsboro to Forest Grove was ripped out in 2024.

Brings back a lot of memories as a former Calgarian though most of the stations shown in this video were rebuilt or built after I lived there... The 8th Street Station was moved from West of 8th to East sometime in the 2000's as part of the downtown platform rebuild project to allow for 4-car trains, up from the max of 3-cars that could fit on the old ones. Too bad the city never build the Stephen Avenue Subway although it's still on the books for future system growth...

Even with all its issues the Seattle Sound Transit LRT project is much needed. Personally I'd have preferred monorail expansion but this is a close second and clearly a well used system at least by American standards...
@subwaymark2 ай бұрын
I agree about the monorial. Honsestly with as busy as the Link it is shows sEattle should have built a full metro when it had a chance in the 1970s, but they rejected it, so the money went to Atlanta's MARTA system. The Light rail cars always feel a bit crowded simply due to theri layout and car width. A 10ft wide metro car would have been much better and no street running. At least Link is well used, IMHO more successful than MAX in Portland.
@stickynorth2 ай бұрын
Great video of my hometown's main transit line! There's still something to be said for this type of service compared to the modern fascination with flat, low-floor trams that every city has been sold lately. Frankly I prefer this one since it has HUGE capacity with 5-car trainsets and long platforms especially under downtown which while expensive and stopped progress of expansion during the lean 80's and 90's when the city was beset with Neo-Con's looking to save a buck, mainly Bill Smith and Ralph Klein who were Mayor and Premier at the time... Just too bad the other planned lines at the time weren't built that would have ran to the Northwest and onto St Albert as well as a South LRT using the High Level Bridge with branches to Century Park and Mill Woods via the CP/Gateway Blvd ROW... Having said that considering what we've got it still gets tremendous ridership per mile.. Something like 7500 passengers per mile which is one of the highest LRT riderships on the continent just below Mexico City, Guadalajara and Calgary...
@stickynorth2 ай бұрын
Another fun fact? The braking systems on all the trains had to be upgraded in 2006 to allow for 6% grades due to the South LRT portal at the U of A campus being redesigned to put trains on the surface right after University Station which is deep under the U of A campus yet as you saw to an at grade station only a half block south at Health Sciences/Jubilee. It saved a ton of cash because of the quicksand conditions under this part of the city and the need for a longer reinforced tunnel otherwise, at least that was the justification at the time if I can recall correctly...
@subwaymark2 ай бұрын
I agree the high-floor lines are roomier and overall faster due to its high quality alignment vs. the Valley Line. The Valley Line is nice though. But it is a bit silly in the modern era having built a new line that is not compatible with the existing lines.
