I worked on this PSA with Mr. Peck in 1984. I was his teleprompter operator. It was 103 degrees that day on Liberty Island. I suffered a heat stroke but somehow got through the shoot. When I was waiting for my boat to go back to NYC, Peck heard I was ill and he came to dock to check on me. I’ll never forget his kindness. A very classy guy.

Seems like vintage cigar commercials always were the best, best looking women such as Edie Adams, most rememberable slogans "Should a gentleman offer a Tiparillo to a lady" and music.... Tijuana Smalls. This White Owl Ad was a first class production for its time period.

LOL, so true, mid 1960's to mid 1970's I was a teen when all the sexy ladies were in the mountain of cigar ads on TV nightly. They were selling "sexy" with the cigars. One must wonder how many of us adolescence boys developed a "Cigar Fetish"later in life due to these ads?

I remember another old Union Carbide ad from The Twentieth Century in which a man is wearing an insulated suit and walking. The background is black. As the camera pans out, you see he is walking on live electrical transmission lines - the type that carry about 500,000 volts and which are made of extremely tall metal lattice towers high off the ground - demonstrating how a material they created works efffectively as an electrical insulator. That ad was probably from the early 60s. It was just as effective as this ad with the chick. Even as a child, I remember The Twentieth Century was a great show, but some of these futurist Union Carbide ads made the show even more alluring.

The absolute epitome of how to be 'natural' in front of the camera. You get the feeling that James Garner isn't addressing a camera, but you personally. I believe he also put his money where his mouth was, and drove several Mazdas. RIP James.

I watched this commercial as a kid. The one thing I've been searching and searching for is a video of a show I watched 50 years ago on Electromagnetic Propulsion where they did one speed test with a canister, then did a second speed test after placing the canister in liquid nitrogen to cool it down and the speed increased 100 times .

I'm sure the Statute of limitations is up by now. Be honest, how many chicks died making this ad? Was there any behind the scenes editing or did a live chick really survive being boiled for 1:18? If this was real, and I suspect that it was, what ever became of "super insulation"? I would love to have that thermos that will keep your coffee hot in the freezer.

Where were these long (2 and 3 minute) Union Carbide ads shown? I can't imagine them buying that much air time. Whatever bad things there where were about the phone monopoly you have to admit Western Electric knew how to make phones. I have read part of the reason At&t was allowed the monopoly was that Western Electric made parts for nuclear bombs. I don't know for sure if that was true but I bet their phones could survive an atomic blast. Sadly Western Electric didn't survive the break up. I would have loved to have seen their take on a cell phone. It probably would have been the size and weight of a brick but also would have been as durable as one.

Superb short from 1974, about aluminum, written by Richard Olmsted. The narrator is Charles Kimbrough who mainly did TV series and movies. Scored by a maestro - the late, great Elmer Bernstein who had just done a couple of John Wayne films ('Cahill, US Marshall' and 'McQ') and a short for director Robert Zemeckis. Fantastic to see footage of an early Seaspeed Hovercraft. This is 'The Princess Anne' and was the 4th SRN-4 built in 1969. It wasn't taken out-of-service until 2000 and is currently undergoing restoration at The Hovercraft Museum in Lee-On-Solent. Here it is seen at either Calais or Boulogne.

Plenty of gloss and colour here! Presumably another of the 'Second Summer' commercials. Music by Brazilian bossa nova singer Astrud Gilberto who, a year previous, had achieved success (and a Grammy) with her version of 'The Girl From Ipanema'. Ads like this would have looked great in the cinema. Splendid stuff. I can only glimpse him briefly but that looks like Woody Strode at 0:09 - but, of course, it could have been any actor.

Good pull on Astrud Gilberto. The same "number one to the sun" tag was on at least one 60-second TV spot. Pretty sure Young & Rubicam was the agency on those. As you suggest, this looks extra-deluxe, IMO in a too-good-for-TV way. Maybe it was for another audience (shrug). I'm guessing this was 1966, +/- a year

This is a great commercial Neil and the jingle is fantastic. My research tells me that the music was composed by Sid Ramin who had, two years earlier (1967), composed the great 'Music To Watch Girls By' for the Pepsi-Cola 'Girl Watchers' campaign. It appears that their 'Smiling Faces, Going Places' campaign, which launched in April 1969, was not well-received. Hard to believe with a superb ad like this! It might have been more down to the literature that accompanied the campaign. Thanks for uploading this.
