I first saw poi in person when I moved to Portland OR. I was on a night bike ride with about 900 riders and there were several stops featuring different activities. At one stop there was a poi dancer with flames. It was magical and I’ve wanted to learn it ever since then.

Thanks for asking. This is poi dancing. It’s an exercise, meditation, rehabilitation tool, performance, art, and personal development vehicle accessible to just about any mostly able bodied person. I started doing it because my friend randomly suggested I buy a set of beanbag poi which I didn’t know how to use and after I got into a car accident, my physical therapist said it would be good for my recovery. I continue to do it because all these things I listed are amazing and I feel better for experiencing them. Mostly, it feels really really good when you hit that special vibe like this one on fire on my practice channel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5LFnKianNiZnrc I teach it and I’ve been doing so since I founded my school (Temple of Poi) in 2002 because there was no good instruction when I started yet this toy/tool/prop changed me and my life. I want to share that incredible gift with others while helping people cultivate their own discipline and expression through this practice - sometimes fun, sometimes challenging, often both. You can also do it on fire although not everybody chooses to do that. My youngest client to go to fire was 7; my oldest client 81. While it certainly isn’t for everyone, you may find it fun. If you’d like to give it a whirl, with a very small investment of resources, you can make your own poi out of household items: templeofpoi.wordpress.com/2016/02/15/6-ways-to-make-poi-out-of-household-item/ And you can download this free lesson made for beginners who never tried it before to teach them a poi dance combination- enter your email address and it will email you a download link. www.payloadz.com/d1/?id=2661230 I also have a Beginner Poi Performance Boot Camp run over Zoom to anywhere in the world - you can check out the details of that here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWKniGmXat12p6M or templeofpoi.wordpress.com/2024/06/20/beginner-poi-performance-boot-camp-zoom/ Or if you want one on one lessons beyond the beginner material, I also offer instruction, the details of which you can check out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqaloKV6l7CcsNE Again, thanks for asking!

I’m sorry that happened to you. It’s a bad introduction to the practice imo. Want to try it again with some guidance? I’ve met a lot of people who tried poi with terrible tools for beginners and then they took a thwack to their face or nuts or boobs and they put them down because it was so unpleasant. There are definitely better and worse tools for starting imo. I think beanbags are the way to go. NGL and say you can’t feel them at all but it’s a whole other thing than, say, tennis ball or contact juggling ball poi which have been pretty common over the years. Here’s some thoughts on starter poi: templeofpoi.wordpress.com/2016/02/15/6-ways-to-make-poi-out-of-household-item/

I would like to get started with poi. Do you have any recommendations for good things to look for when buying a first set of poi pieces?
@Templeofpoi
@Templeofpoi 16 күн бұрын
sorry for the delay getting back to you -- long day. I also had a lot of thoughts I wanted to share. Per your inquiry about the poi, hands down, if you're serious about it, I recommend Flowtoys.com/podpoi. It's pricey but they have a great warranty, replacements at discounts, trade in for partial credit and I love their product. Plus I've known them for years. I don't get a kickback for promoting them either. They have very intelligent design functions across their brand and have an environmental consciousness about how they run their business. That said, I can appreciate the price tag feeling prohibitive. A few months ago I did a video analyzing a bunch of products on Amazon. Turned out I didn't like any of the ones I found for under $50 as a first set (I liked a few in other contexts) and if you watch this video it will explain the various reasons why. kzbin.info/www/bejne/moC5g5Z6qbOJr8U I recommend people make their own poi if they aren't sure they are going to love it so they don't invest too much into it and don't end up buying something that will end up in the landfill. There's so much you may not know about what you prefer in poi and some purchases have no flexibility in them. Cord thickness, stiffness, slipperiness, weight to length ratio, head size, head weight, head material, handle type, handle weight, grip requirements and on and on all impact what might make you chose one type of poi over another and I think it's very personal. IME, every poi has something to teach you if you work it to your edge. Thus, to help artists get more clear on what to consider when making a larger, more long term investment, I encourage people to make their own from household items which one can largely repurpose: templeofpoi.wordpress.com/2016/02/15/6-ways-to-make-poi-out-of-household-item/ Meanwhile, this channel obviously has a wealth of videos to explore. I do have some recommendations for beginners though. First, you can download this free lesson made for beginners who never tried it before to teach them a poi dance combination- enter your email address and it will email you a download link. www.payloadz.com/d1/?id=2661230 Additionally I have two beginner courses you can download. Beginner Poi Moves focuses on about 25 drills and over 50 different moves. The course is $50 and you can check it out here: store.payloadz.com/go?id=2640691 The combo above is a one of the things taught in that course so think of it as a sample of what you'd be studying. The second course is Beginner Poi Dance which focuses on expanding your repertoire and connecting the patterns together into sequences. If Beginner Moves is the alphabet of poi, Beginner Dance is the poetry of poi and while the poem may be something like “The Cat In The Hat” in it’s simplicity, simple can be effective. You would need to know, basically, all the material from the Beginner Moves course to effectively complete the Beginner Dance Course. Also, $50, you can check this course out here: store.payloadz.com/go/?id=2688705 If you want a preview of the material taught in this course, you can download this free lesson which includes one of the follow the flow videos from the last lesson: store.payloadz.com/go?id=2688710 All of that said, I also have a Beginner Poi Performance Boot Camp run over Zoom to anywhere in the world - you can check out the details of that here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWKniGmXat12p6M or templeofpoi.wordpress.com/2024/06/20/beginner-poi-performance-boot-camp-zoom/ Or if you want one on one lessons beyond the beginner material, I also offer instruction, the details of which you can check out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqaloKV6l7CcsNE That's a lot of information. LMK if you have any other questions and feel invited to drop me a note directly over email if that's easier at GlitterGirl at TempleOfPoi. Hope you're having a great day!

I’m not sure which “this” you mean. If it’s spinning poi, I got my first set in November 99 but didn’t actually see it until April 2000 which is when I started. If you mean teaching, I went pro and started the temple in January 2002. If you mean this move specifically, maybe a decade. If you mean teaching this move, this was the first time. If you mean making video tutorials from classes, since January 2023. If you mean teaching 1 on 1 zoom classes, April 2020. 🥹
