Hello, I just found your channel. I'm hoping to learn as much as I can and to understand it. I've been sewing for a while but still need help. I would like to learn how to make a skirt block so I can use it to make my commercial pattern fit correctly. Thanks

Hi new plan to sew, it was to warm to sew the last couple of months. Back at it, trying out my new Pfaff too. Question, how much material do I need for these trousers?
@creativebobbin422 күн бұрын
ooh great. It really depends a lot on how wide the fabric is and if you can cut the panels up and down if you don't have a pattern. Best to make the pattern and then lay it out to work it out really. They do take a fair bit though, trousers are always deceiving!

Thank you for this extremely informative tutorial. I am excited to have a bodice block. One spot I am stuck on - using your calculations (bust/waist x 6) my dart width comes out to 7.8" (19.8 cm)! That is a big honkin' dart! Is this actually the length? I tried another tutorial (kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2WymWqAhM2Uo6s) using the calculations (full bust - underbust / 4) my dart width comes out to 1.75". What am I doing wrong?
@creativebobbin429 күн бұрын
Hi, thank you. Ok so that's definitely not right! It is the width and is generally around 5-7cm. I'm not quite sure where you went wrong. If you give me your measurements I can calculate it for you. You can message me privately via my Facebook page if you'd prefer.

Hi Ali. Is the front pitch 1/3 or 1/4 of the way up? Excellent channel. Thank you.
@creativebobbin4211 күн бұрын
Thank you 🙂 When you're drawing the front curve, the point where it swings from curved in to curved out is 1/4 the way up. You need to mark the point on the bodice too for tracing the shape, so you need to mark this 1/4 of the way up on the bodice block. Does that make sense?

I'm new to sewing, should we cut out two of each of the sides we made?
@creativebobbin4212 күн бұрын
Yes, cut out 2 of each, put the back on folded fabric, then add a seam allowance on the front to pin it together.
@xoSiNgInGiNtHeRaInox12 күн бұрын
I don't fully understand what is meant by put the back on folded fabric, I'm sorry! Does it mean that the side that has the center back and back dart should be cut on the opposite side of the fabric you cut the front side from? Or that the way you cut two of each side is by folding the fabric so you cut two at once? I'm confused 😕
@creativebobbin4211 күн бұрын
if you fold the fabric in half you can lay the centre back on the fold of the fabric, so that piece is double layer and you open it up to one piece. Then put the front panel on 2 layers of fabric. I will make a video this week to explain the cutting out. Thanks for the feedback, any questions like this help me to know what people want to learn 😊

Thank you for clearly stating you need more ease in cap if your bicep is larger. The exact issue i was trying to fix
@creativebobbin4213 күн бұрын
Sleeves are a real pain sometimes. If you’re making something fitted and have a big bicep particularly. I’m really short so my armhole opening isn’t very big so I always have a lot of sleeve head to ease in to my armhole. I’ve seen a lot of sleeve drafting instructions that work from the armhole size, but working from the sleeve width makes more sense to me! Let me know how you get on 😊

Thanks, could you please cover adding ease to a basic block? My basic block ( not from your tutorial) fit me like a glove! but had no ease for movement. Should I add at sides or slash and spread the middle? Thanks
@creativebobbin4214 күн бұрын
I need to make separate videos for each aspect, hopefully I’ll get them done over the next few weeks. How much ease do you want to add? If it’s just a tiny bit I’d add it at the sides, otherwise split it between the sides and the cf/cb. You need to make sure your armholes don’t get too wide and your bust point remains in the right place.
@abigailpip11212 күн бұрын
@@creativebobbin42Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for the new videos. I don't know how much ease to add. The test piece I made from the block would have made a good mannequin, it was exactly my size! I just need to add enough ease to be able to use garments I make from the block, how much is "normal" for a basic block pattern?
@creativebobbin4211 күн бұрын
@@abigailpip112 Well I usually add 5cm (2") to the block, and that makes a very fitted bodice, then if I want a more comfortable fitting garment I then add a bit more when making a pattern from it. If in doubt I measure myself with the tape measure as loose as I want the garment, then make sure the front and back widths add up to that.
@annfulcher40714 күн бұрын
Thank you for this tutorial. You are the first person I have seen that uses the notch and zig zag stitch method on the bodice seam, I have been using this method for over 25 years and find works perfectly. I also hand stitch the non iron interlining onto the main fabric rather than machine stitch it, it takes a bit longer, but gives a much better result. To prevent the fraying I either overlock the edges, or I use a thin iron on interlining as well as the non iron interlining. The extra work makes it all worthwhile when you see the final result.
@creativebobbin4214 күн бұрын
It's always worth spending time on things like this. I didn't used to be so patient and would always regret it when the seam didn't lay perfectly flat.

Fun 🤗! One thing I do not understand completely is the measurement between the two first lines, the upper (sleeve head) and the lower. Is it the measurement from the bodice pattern or from LPS to arm hole? Because my front and back bodice is not the same height from LPS. The back is a little bit higher/longer.
@creativebobbin4219 күн бұрын
Hi, it's the measurement I show at the beginning, measuring from the shoulder seam down to the elastic I put around the top of my arm. If this is tricky to do you can measure around the total armhole opening and divide that number by 3, but it's not quite as accurate.
@Teresasblaze19 күн бұрын
ive just made this bodice block from your instructions and somehow my bust area is 12 cm too narrow. goodness knows where i went wrong. the neck and waist are prfect. Im 68 and full busted and a bit of a belly. can you advise. ive looked at doing full bust adjustment to it but 12 cms divided by 2 is quite a big amount to adjust by.
@creativebobbin4219 күн бұрын
hmm, I wonder where you went wrong. The first place I'd start is to measure your bust again, then lay your front and back pattern pieces side by side, and the total width should be just over half of your bust measurement. If it's not then my guess is you either wrote down your bust measurement incorrectly or just measured it wrong when drawing the block? Let me know how you get on with that?
@Teresasblaze19 күн бұрын
@@creativebobbin42 just measure front and back as suggested and it measures 1 cm more than half my bust. really do not know what is happening here. the back fits perfectly it is just the front from top of bust to just above the waist.
@creativebobbin4219 күн бұрын
@@Teresasblaze I wonder if you need to lower the bust point, and make the dart below the bust a bit narrower, if so you could take a bit more out of the waist at the side seam so the waist doesn’t get too big. If it’s too short from the armhole line to the front shoulder it could be pulling it up too, that’s worth looking at.

@creativebobbin42Ай бұрын
Yes I think it’s viscose. Lightweight and drapey is ideal or it’ll be bulky on the waist. If I was using a knit I’d make it a little bit smaller on the hips and a fair bit smaller on the waist.
