As a new beginner using a Akai MPC One Plus drum machine sampler I recently got a brand spanking new Roland JV-1980 midi sound module & fully expanded it with 4 SR-JV-80 expansion boards (Session, Orchestral, Dance & Keyboards 🎹 of the 60s $ 70s) plus the Roland XV5080 & the XV5050 all sound like trash to me because of the SRX cards plus the converters are different & they sound to clean so in my opinion the JV80 sound is the BEST!!!! & the JV- 1080 the JV-2080 & the JD990 are still being used by HipHop,Neo Soul & RnB Producers til this day because a lot of Platinum hits have been made off those midi sound modules

I usually find the synths I buy to have enough raw material in them to let me create the patches I need. To me it seems like those cards are for people that don’t really want to get into working with their synths. First thing I do with a new synth is fill up all the patch slots with my own patches. I don’t use presets unless it’s like an acoustic piano sound or something. So it looks more like hoarding to me, than actual tools for creativity. When I got the Vintage synth card for my JV-80 back in the day I realised that it really didn’t add any raw material to the workflow, basically multiple repetitions of saw and square waves.

I used to work with a great reggae guitar player almost 20 years ago ( R.I.P. Bim) and that was his amp, he had a great sound always, it was mostly his playing, he only used this amp cause it was convenient and sounded good enough. a great guitar player is what you need, not a Peavey decade. Cool amp tho

Thanks for this, I've been trying to figure this out for far too long now. So just to clarify, if I plug my Midi keyboard onto my Pc with this set up, I'll be able to control my ipad synth apps within the DAW?

The crave is incredible value for money, i got it for 150 eur. A tear. The filter is really good, even tho the highpass isnt that good. Their modules are okay, little issues like their system100m noise source has a low aplitude! So for sample and hold i always need another noise source like from the crave which is annoying. The quality is eh, they wont age well, the "colorplate" of a knob already just fell off. (system100m, arp2600). B for them.

You can't really assess these synths on looks, price and market niche alone. The sound, build quality, I/O options and functionality are kinda important too. I've owned eleven of the products you featured here and they are all pretty good. It just depends how well they fit in with your setup and musical style. My favourite is the DeepMind 12.

Talking out of two sides of your seemingly bored out of your mind face. But you show promise. There’s something interesting there. Kind of like the special likable thing about the Peavry Decade. Anyway. On the one hand you acknowledge that making you profit on a Goodwill flip was cool. On the other it irks you that the stock price went up and some owners are selling high. That is how to make a buck. Are you putting notches in your belt for each person who might change their mind and not find one and buy it for a couple of hundred? Fact is, people are bored, they buy things that they hope will entertain them for any length of time. And will shell out big bucks. It’s more exciting that way. It also make the deal some may find amidst the hype cooler too. It’s all about the need to release happy hormones. Being a bubble burster is a buzz kill. Party poopers are too common. The world needs less wining. Celebrate the couple of smiles selling an old Peavey brought to the faces of those who had one to sell. On a side note; There is a certain sound that comes from a vintage amp like the Peavey Decade. These nuance is subtle, but it matters.

Question, does anyone here know: since the SRX boards (or "cards") bundled all the waveforms from the previous gen SR-JV80 boards, would it be possible to somehow get the SRX presets working using SR-JV80 boards? Could they be in Sysex form somewhere? I've got a hardware XV-5080 loaded with those, but don't have any SRX boards. The Cloud option is really convenient, though. All the waveforms are even searchable in recent versions of Zenology Pro, which is REALLY convenient.

You’d have to load a preset, save to user, the. Load that user preset and edit and remap all the waveforms to the waveforms on the old cards. Doable for a preset or two but not a bunch.

I did not know about the Roland Intergra 7 having all the cards in it's rom! Well sir, I own the Fantom X6 and I play World music so having the SRX-09 World card made sense to me even for the $180 I paid extra. Why? The Fantom IS a Sampler, and can be expanded to the rare 1GB stick of ram and 8GB of Roland branded Compact Flash, but the issue is load time and sound sample set volatility. When you load your own samples, you do have to make sure the samples/patches are always in the same spot across all midi files and that you have enough ram to load them everytime. Also need to account for load time. 128MB of samples takes 22 minutes to load into a Fantom X series keyboard/module. The SRX cards have the samples I like already built in to flash memory on the cards, so load time is instant and the cards come with the patches already setup for you every time so music I recorded in 2009 using my Fantom X8 and SRX-09 card, will play in 2024 in my X6 keyboard I bought recently without me having to rebuild a library of samples and then remember what patch location I originally mapped the samples to. I am not a fan of cloud and subscription services. I like to buy things and keep them for life in my home not in the Ether.. So the choice to buy or not to buy is individual

LOL this is a lot of random rambling. The SRX cards are questionable because SRX 1/2/3/4 are really specific limited expansions to fill a niche, and everything after SRX-05 is repackaged SR-JV80 cards. But that doesn't make them bad. The SRX cards are 64 MB, and they went back to the original source and put multiple SR-JV80 cards onto a single card in higher quality. SRX-07 Ultimate Keys is repackaged waveforms, but Spectrasonics went back and made new patches out of them on the newer XV hardware. That one's worth a lot. But a lot of that stuff is really stupid. SRX-12 is a bunch of repackaged EP sounds, and most of them are just adding different effects. Nobody needs 50 different types of Wurlitzer + flanger/chorus waveforms when the XV modules all had multiple MFX flangers with every possible parameter, even an arp-y step flanger, and even more chorus options. I think even SRX-04 is repackaged. Not from an SR-JV80 card but from older Roland CD-based orchestral samples. But it's really good if you want strings. The SRX-09 World sounds are just awful. Half the patch names are pretty cringe, and I think maybe the sounds were just aggressively overused in the '90s because to me it all sounds worse than anything on the 1991 Proteus/3 World. The only SRX card I actually want to use is SRX-05 Supreme Dance, because that was all new sounds for 2002, and it was done by Spectrasonics who did all the best Roland sounds. The Platinum Tracks card is much more dated because it's the repackaged overused '90s cards, so it mostly sounds like a worse version of an E-Mu Planet Phatt. If you want good retro '90s sounds you'd want to get the SR-JV80-06 Dance or M-DC1 Dance which was discontinued for copyright reasons so it wasn't repackaged as an SRX but it's easy to find.

I agree with most of this, but don't get that dance card. It's sucks. I had to return it. You would better with the Platinum Tracks. Putting multiple cards on one was a great idea. It give customers flexible options. I don't know what this dude is talking about. I got a XV5080 with 8 cards. The Interga-7 can only play 4 card or something dumb like that. That sucks!

@SlyHikari03 Bingo! This reminds me that I still need to finish sampling those drums into my Akai Force. I more synths had the EMU G-Chip for their drum sounds, which acts like a form of time stretching, so as you play a kick at higher or lower semitones on a MIDI controller keys/pads, it still sounds natural. SOS has an article on it called the Hisory of EMU.

I'm on the fence as to whether I should start purchasing some of the SRX instruments. I've been producing music with FL Studio for the last 20 years and have been really getting bored with Nexus and Omnisphere. I don't exactly *NEED* some new VST's, but it would definitely help with inspiration. With that said.. should I purchase the SRX VSTs for FL? The price seems great at $70 dollars per. I'm shocked today was the first time hearing about these SRX plugins! Producing music has been my career since I was a teenager and I can't believe I've never heard of these plugins prior to today! They sound fantastic!

Ya, He's pretty much saying he cant go the hardware route which i can understand but its not good to sway other people on it. The hardware versions of the SRX cards will sound warmer richer compared to the same SRX in roland cloud. The sounds might be the same BUT the VST versions will sound thin and cold. I can hear people even saying to go zenology = Roland cloud which you do get the SRX but again its VSTS and zenology from what i heard sounds thin which has alot of SRX sounds in it and again the hardware would sound fuller.

That's some valuable insight, thanks! I feel like the piano sounds on SRX-02 and 11 are great and it's still hard to find any affordable piano sound module now, so it's a close call (if you go hardware-only). Otherwise, I agree that the VSTs are cheaper and provide you with everything you need at a lower cost.
