Aren’t you supposed to remove the lower unit?🤔 i see alot of others remove the lower and attach a garden hose to the pickup tube. So i am not sure. It makes sense since thats the flow of water usually.
@jim218042 ай бұрын
This motor has a hose attachment to flush the motor so the water flows backwards through the motor but still flushes it. I have a second video where we removed the head cover (not the cylinder head) to manually scrape the deposits out of the water passages. This was done since the mineral deposits were so bad. This fixed the problem. There are no significant deposits in the lower unit so that isn’t an issue. The Hammerhead flush won’t damage aluminum parts.

All my frames are in excellent condition and only one sash is starting to get some rot witch I’ll cut out and replace. The price Anderson charges for sashes or there conversion kits are ridiculous. So I ended up removing the bottom piece of trim and drilling into the back of the rotted sill about every 6 inches or so. I injected Great Stuff foam in there, the regular kind, and shut the windows so it wouldn't bulge up and make them hard to close. Excess foam leaked out of the holes and I kinda massaged the foam around in the sill to keep it all even. In the end it worked like a charm! They are rock solid and I assume add some R value to the enclosure lol!

You can purchase a factory replacement sill direct from Andersen or Home Depot (much cheaper). Replacement is extremely easy - cost is about 35 dollars. The problem with these windows if the wood BEHIND the plastic channels - they also rot as they act like a straw over time. I was able to perfectly fabricate wood inserts that go up the bottom once you use a spade drill bit to remove as much rot as possible. Then you use a two part epoxy gun with Advanced repair tech epoxy to pump into the plastic channels then slide up to the fabricated wood into the outer channel of the frame within the vinyl. For the second part of the channel you have to fabricate another long piece cutting it into small blocks it looks like a square U. For each piece shoot a small amount of epoxy slide another until it fills the channel. Bottom piece cut the final piece to fit flush at 12 deg. Sounds ridiculous but it makes it a perfect repair and keeps the outer vinly frame rock solid Slide the new still in - block shim it with the included shims in the kit from Andersen and replace the jamb liners. I replace my liners to make the window as new as possible. You can order these from Home Depot as well for about 12-16 per piece. I've done at least 6 so far and they look like new. Sashes also go and can be repaired with Advanced Repair Tech epoxy or I replace both sashes. For side rot on the wood frame - chisel or grind it out and fill with advanced repair compound using acrylic pieces to make a perfectly flat and square repair with the channels for the jamb liners.
@jim218042 жыл бұрын
thanks, I never thought to check if you could just buy the sill. I figured they would want to sell replacement windows. My house has steel siding which it almost impossible to remove without bending it. For replacements they would just caulk where the steel siding meets the new window because they couldn’t add flashing. That would most likely breakdown and leak.
@stim1412 жыл бұрын
@@jim21804 Andersen will sell almost any individual part for any of their windows. I have Narrowline 200's which frankly suck - but I don't want to spend 30K to replace them. The sashes rot at the sides and bottoms and the frames ultimately rot. The sills rot because the end caps are exposed on most clad houses - brick faced they stand a chance because they are covered. Check your frames - not the exposed wood that you repaired but the wood behind the vinyl that runs around the window. If the sashes are rotted the wood inside the vinyl acts like a straw and sucks up water and rots. I'm doing a couple now and had about 1 1/2 FEET of wood rotting inside the vinyl. I found a way to replace it by making precise inserts that I slide INSIDE from the bottom. Makes everything solid and it will never rot out again. I have fully function shutters that have 8" lags pintels that go through my siding to custom blocks between the jack studs and window frame - to replace the frame would be a nightmare that is why I'm fixing them - too costly to replace the frame because of the shutters.

Any advice on how to get the windows to slide up and down easier. Mine were hard the slide up and down since I bought the house. Never open them much because of central air. When I replaced the sills I painted the sashes but sanded the sides where they contact the slides. Also, sprayed silicon on the slides but they are still hard to raise and lower.

Did someone count the number of turns of the (large) adjustment nut? If I start the nut on the stud, how many turns to make it back where it was? Please post a reply with that number. Thanks! (I didn't read James' comment about counting turns until after I had removed the nuts and spring.) ☹️
@jim218042 жыл бұрын
When I made this video I had purchased a pressure gauge and the fittings to splice between the pump and the hose so I could adjust the pressure. It cost around $30 for everything. I had the Idea of counting the number of turns when taking the nut off when I was repairing by brother in laws pressure washer. If I recall it was around 20 turns. Going with the gauge is the best way but you can try and adjust it by trial and error. Just aim it at something you cleaned before and see if it looks about the same. Even when I use the gauge I always under adjust it by a few hundred PSI to hopefully be a little easier on the pump.
@davecc00002 жыл бұрын
@@jim21804 Thanks James. What pressure does the unloader valve control? What pressure are you adjusting? The "spray washing" pressure? Or something else (like when you release the trigger)?
@jim218042 жыл бұрын
It is the pressure when you pull the trigger. When you let go of the trigger the unloader valve kicks in and the pump goes into bypass mode. That is why you get no pressure when the unloader sticks. The pump stays in bypass. To adjust the unloader tighten the large nut against the spring. Start the machine and pull the trigger to see how much pressure you have. If it seems low, (with the machine still running) release the trigger, tighten the nut a few more turns and pull the trigger again. Repeat these steps until the pressure seems like it is where it was before. Then tighten the small nut against the large nut to “lock them”. I have used this method in the past and it works ok. I adjusted mine so it would clean concrete in one pass. My machine has a max pressure of 1750 psi. If you decide to use a gauge you will need the special fittings for a pressure washer. I bought a female adapter that attaches to the pressure washer (where the pressure hose goes) on one side and pipe thread on the other. I attached a 8 inch section of pipe to that. Then a “T” fitting for the gauge to attach, added another short section or regular pipe and attached a male adapter (pipe thread to pressure washer thread) so I could attach the pressure washer hose to it. The 8 inch pipe brings the gauge out from under the pressure washer so it is easier to read. The gauge and adapters are available online. It sounds complicated but it really isn’t.

Hey James, I have the same issue with the Anderson sills at my house. Forgive me if this is a silly question, but are you concerned about mold growth inside the your garage or house? I’m assuming some moisture may have leaked down between your drywall or plaster and the exterior wall. Appreciate any insight you have.
@jim218042 жыл бұрын
I didn’t have any mold issue when I took the window sills out. The sills rot for 2 reasons. First, the sides are open and not wrapped. Second, they used tape on the top edge of the window where the sides meet the top(on the outside of the house). The tape lets water in so the wood on the sides rot and lets water into the sill. The sill is enclosed in vinyl so it can’t dry out. When I replaced the sills, the outside frame wood was rotted but the vinyl is formed so the sides are still fairly strong without the wood. In a perfect world I would have just replaced the windows. However, my house has steel siding which cannot be removed without bending it (unlike vinyl siding). Some window companies will just replace the window and caulk between the window and the siding which will eventually leak. The proper way to do it is to remove the siding, replace the window with flashing/water seal around the window, then reinstall the siding. Then it will be water tight. Replacing the sills the way I did keep the flashing/water seal on the top and sides of the window intact. Good luck with your windows.

I bought some fittings and a pressure gauge to adjust it afterwards. Another way to do it would be to mark the nut with a marker before removing it. Then count the number of turns needed to take the nut off. When you put it back in tighten the nut that number of turns and the adjustment should be close to what it was.

Those windows suck ass! I’m working on a large picture window that’s designed the same way:(
@jim218043 жыл бұрын
Agree. My house was built in 1978 so the windows are quite old. I have steel siding which is difficult to remove without bending it. The proper way to replace a window is to remove the siding so you can put flashing around the perimeter to prevent leaks. When guys do replacement windows they will caulk the seam where the window meets the siding which eventually leaks. My repair leaves the existing flashing intact except at the bottom. I used PVC cement to glue a piece of PVC trim to the bottom of the new window sill to close in the small gap at the bottom. Caulk around the entire window but leave an opening where the outside vinyl meets the new sill to allow any water that gets in to leak out. The repair should last a long time. Good luck. Take you time and you should be fine.
