Thank you for your design. In the past, I had something very simple and not a sturdy. Even made risers like you did and can put on a padlock Used a door padlock hasp as could not get what you had Probably a bit over the top line groove with webbing. Also made one for a spinning rod and because the groove was so long, I cut another piece of tubing and then cut it down a bit so it would fit inside the original tube This meant it was stronger. Have drilled through the end caps into the tube at the padlock end So the caps are attached with present with string to the tube, so they cannot be lost Did some colour coding with the keys and the padlocks Use small pieces of reflective tape and then clear nail varnish over them Thank you again for your design much appreciated

Since this was a how to video, i'm trying to figure out, where did you actually facilitate to show the viewer how to install a new net. Telling somebody versus showing them are very different. Make sure next time you do a video like this physically take them step by step.

You lined with foam. Do droppers catch the foam ? I was considering lining with rubber strip(s) Because of droppers Lid idea is brilliant

When bamboo rods were popular in the 40s dry fly fishing wasn’t really a thing yet. My grandfather who grew up in the Catskills never even heard of dry fly fishing in he was a grown man. They only fished wet flys

You could also just collect trout or salmon eggs from the inside river bends and glue them to your hook. Not really a fly. More of a bait. Maybe you could catch grass hoppers and superglue them to your hook for dry fly hopper. I think you’re on to something. Maybe even mayflies! So many possibilities!

I design and make my own bamboo fly rods. While I agree with most of what you have said, modern bamboo can be faster than you indicated. It is all in the taper and with the advent of hollowing and advances in the same, a bamboo rod can be fairly fast and still retain that unique ability to transmit the feel of the cast and protect light tippets. Work with a custom rodmaker and you can design your own rod of a lifetime.

I have to disagree. The 30’s were considered the golden age of fly fishing in the Catskills. Dry fly fishing came hand in hand with the introduction of brown trout. This occurred in the 1880’s.

@@DougLyons-d8t, ok - what does this have to with modern bamboo fly rods?

If you are an occasional fisherman that goes out a few times a 5wt 9ft is the all around trout rod. If you fish seriously you need a streamer rod like a 6wt or 7wt. I go with a 7wt because it pulls double duty as my small mouth rod. You also need a general purpose rod that will throw drys and nymphs a 5wt is that for me and most people. For small streams or purposes dry fly fishing a 3wt 7ft 6 inch i don’t go down to a 2wt because I still want to be able to throw a nymph if I need to and I am a mile from the truck on a blue line.

I’ve made about 8 bamboo rods from Tonkin cane. Like tying your own flies it adds to the experience. I have about 25 12ft culms in my garage that have been there since the late 90’s. In a couple when I retire I’m going to build them out.

Always used Hardy, click and pawl reels, for trout, salmon, and steelhead. They are loud, the drag is inefficient, ancient technnology. Perfect, pun intended.

I am still fishing with my original 1967 Model 1495 Pflueger Medalist I bought for $9.95 I believe. American made. Original parts. The drag never fails. I have caught hundreds of Trout , Steelhead, and Salmon in the last 50 years with it. It's been dunked in saltwater many times. On a whim, I bought a fancy very expensive reel 10 years ago. It lasted about 90 days. The new reels and rods can not hold up over time or years of strenuous use. I still use my fly rod which is an original SAGE 4 piece 5#. I received it in 1973! American made. Original guides. The guide wrappings have even changed color over the years. I fish to fish. Not make a fashion statement. No..they are not for sale.

Tired of the spinning reel. Need something simple. I need to up my saltwater fishing. Now i know. Thanks

To anyone considering this reel. I caught a ~20lbs chinook salmon and the drag held up to it no problem. I put it on the maxcatch salt pro 8wt as a backup rod, but I really enjoy using it.

I make a crawdad pattern on a 60 degree jig hook with a tungsten bead out of nothing but a pheasant skin it can be stripped on 4/5 WT fly rod or dead drift it under a bobber on ultralight spinning gear. Look for it on Gunnar Bramers KZbin channel.
