I was so devastated about Kiki not talking again at the end when I watched the movie as a kid. I feel a lot better now knowing that there is a version where he does talk again at the end. I don’t think it ruins her character arc either, it just turns the ending from being kinda happy but mostly depressing to actually happy. At least to me.

I wholeheartedly disagree about it being a bad ending because by having Kiki still able to speak with him it shows how she is more mature than when she began, but still is able to hold onto her inner childhood.

I have seen "My Neighbor Totoro" on HBO Max and I really enjoyed it and I definitely plan to get it on DVD (2-Disc Disney DVD) and VHS (Fox Family Favorites)

It still uses the old dub on netflix I believe. I say this because I just watched it with the added lines and english music...

In the newer edit some of Kiki's lines literally sound like she’s speaking through a fan, while in the original the lines are seamless. On Max in America it uses the newer one (which id have no problem with if it weren’t for what I just mentioned) but the thing about Netflix that bugs me is the Japanese footage instead of the English footage.

It's interesting to note that so many people seem to prefer the dub's changed ending, simply because it was from their childhood, unlike Kiki herself who changed as she grew.

I absolutely hate the fact that for Americans "funny character" is middle aged man that is talking all the time and commenting everything. Jiji was cute, innocent, confused all the time (dubbing was made by a girl tho) and that was magnetic!!

After watching the original multiple times, then failing to sit through the English version three times, I finally gave it a chance. The dub is painful for too many reasons. It’s a shame that it alone will make first time watchers deter from this masterpiece. Apathetic deliveries, forced accents, faltering interpretations, tarnished chemistry between Toshio and Taeko.. the list goes on. Even the modern audio itself feels super imposed against the early 90’s soundtrack, like pasting a printed picture in the middle of an oil painting. I agree with you in that the flashbacks of young Taeko and her family were the only decent part of the dub. They should have done better to produce something worthy of the fans and Takahatas hard work.

Jiji is a character too. And his de-anthropomorphisation is like the death of his character. Now hes just an average cat with nothing behind the eyes.

I 100% prefer her to be able to talk to the cat in the end. Its so strange and out of theme to have such a tragic and heartbreaking thing like losing the ability to communicate with her best friend, when the show is so kind and avoids tragic things like death, or helium being explosive. I was really quite upset to hear him meow in the end rather than say something. Silly.

This movie is kind of a slog for people not familiar with “slice of life” anime storytelling. It really is like reading someone’s diary. Hyper-normal conversations, no real stakes. It’s well made for what it is but God help you if you expected action, comedy, or a “cinematic” level of drama and romance. It also relies heavily on nostalgia for 1970’s Japan and the Japanese countryside. It’s rough if you don’t have that reference point. Also yeah, the accents should have been consistent throughout. I heard somewhere that Japanese directors tend to tell English language voice actors to emote a lot less than they make JP actors. I’m yet to find a reason why. You can see it in the different versions of this movie as well as the anime Beaststars, many of the other Ghibli movies (Liam Neeson in Ponyo…), and some of the Final Fantasy games.

i don't wanna be called out for this but I honestly don't understand why people prefer the Fox/Japanese Airline version when the voice actors in that version didn't sound like they were acting but more like reading the lines so they can get paid which is why it can never exist nowadays and that's why the Disney version on the other hand used actual voice performances especially from big names and I honestly would find it laughable if the Fox/Japanese Airline version was on both Blu-ray and Streaming since only the Disney dub gets them.

I always thought the meow means that while Kiki is still young, she's starting to gain her maturity and Jiji who served as a second conscience, was no longer needed and could go back to being just a cat.

The ending depends on the person watching, the author intended the original ending, but maybe when you feel down you can relate more to the american version

As someone in their thirties I've been watching this film since I was a kid and it has a different meaning to me every time I watch it. This has helped me through so many struggles, my parents divorce, moving out on my own, bad relationships, hating my appearance, losing my beloved black cat, depression, and doubting myself in my career. Every little girl and woman should watch this movie.

The alternate ending is way better. I hated the original ending with a passion. It just didn't feel complete and so i thought maybe there would be a sequel, but nope. Also, if the message that Kiki 'grew up' it wasn't clear at all. The original ending made it clear to me that something was still wrong with kiki and that she isn't fully healed

2:26 Next is Bruno Campos as Goat in Granny's farm but only the goat says "Baa" voice is trying to steal Satsuki & her mother's corn to take it to hospital in 1993 streamline / Fox dubbed My Neighbor Totoro version. We're assembled most notably Bruno Campos known for playing Prince Naveen on Disney (2009 film) The Princess and the Frog.

This is the case of Cinema Paradiso. The international ending gives a heartwarming nostalgia ending with Toto reminiscing about his lost love . While the true ending is grim and shows you that reality is that, harsh and not as pretty. Over the years as I got older , I appreciate more the original Italian ending , because life is never a happy ending . As the director of Kiki says , to gain, you have to lose . Such is life

funny how this film did the same for antwerp cathedral as "hunchback of notre dame" did for the Paris cathedral. both books were written in the 1800's and were rather dark stories, but with a pedestal to art and architecture... Quida was very negative about Belgians, I got to say it sounded rich coming from a brit... england was not a paradise for animals and poor people either in the 1870's, and her remark that flemish are all illiterate because they didn't speak french (what a logic) XD the book sure IS NOT popular here! we on average all speak 3 languages (including Dutch and french), and have done so for centuries, many also know german (I'd dare to say Luxembourgians and Belgians are the most quadrilingual peoples in the entire world)... but it did gain attention for the cathedral and the art of rubens for which she should be applauded, also for being a genuine animal lover in the 1800's.
