Hi Janet - I know, it's just a lot of work making the video. Plus, I have to remember the name of every plant as I walk around - hahaha. So much has changed since I keep moving things around or buying new plants! My new plant - I received a bunch of little ones from a friend - is Virginia Bluebells. I have no idea if they will survive.

Beautiful woodland gardens you have. I too use the chopped leaves mostly oak trees. but i remove come srpiing time, i think i will just leave it on this year to see what happens, I always put it down more for the shelter it brings of the cold in the winter? I just found a wonderful ornamental shade grass you can use. it's very pretty it comes either variegated and Bright lime and then the solid green color. Its Japanese forest grass called hakone I think is how its spelled. love love it! Oh, and another bright lime color shade plant is the sun king Arelia? check that one out too., Genie
@marygarlough1589 Жыл бұрын
since making this video, I bought 3 Sun King aralias - I think my shade is almost too intense. I have them in another garden in Ohio where they get more sun and they are doing great. I thought I had my Hakone grasses in the video but maybe not - I have two groups of 5 - I love them!! But my striped ones all reverted back to solid lime green. They are still lovely - but mine also get a far amount of sun since I lost a big tree. Happy gardening!

I am in zone 7B. i really enjoyed your video. You caught my attention on your mulching your oak leaves. i invested in a leaf mulching and it was the best investment ever made. I like the look of the leaf mulching on the yard. your hard work has made your garden so beautiful!!!
@marygarlough1589 Жыл бұрын
thanks - Yes, the mulching is a lot of work and time consumming but sure seems to be worth it. I never have to buy mulch and have very little weeds. But the day is coming closer when we physcially can no longer do this. But until then, it's our fall excerise!

Such a lovely area. How did you manage the tree roots when planting
@marygarlough15893 жыл бұрын
yes, that is a tricky problem. I tried to choose plants that didn't require deep digging and then just kept moving my shovel around until I found a place where I could actually dig. The farther out from the tree trunk, the easier it is.

Fun and interesting to see the update. I too hate Japanese anemones I've kept them under control but have to get rid of them for good. I need a mulcher. I have plenty of leaves and put them in a plastic bag to rot, but they are still in there the following summer in perfect shape. So a mulcher it will be and back onto the beds! @@marygarlough1589 I compost all my oak leaves. I add in a big bag of alfalfa cubes to it every year to get more nitrogen into my compost. I have some hostas under my oak tree now, I might add in hydrangeas in-between the hostas.

Hi Mary, your garden is so beautiful, can you tell me your zone? and how much hour of sun the hydrangea have? I am in Zone 5 and my mop head hydrangea bud dosen;t make it to bloom
@marygarlough15893 жыл бұрын
Hi - I am southeast Michigan - between zone 5 and 6. The hydrangea gets dappled sun in the afternoon but never for long direct periods of time. It's not a mop head though - it's a flat lace cap. I think mop heads are very unreliable in our zones and depending upon late freezes in the Spring, they don't bloom. I've replaced all my Endless Summer and mop head varieties with Annabelles, Quick Fires,Limelight , Oakleaf, and my new favorite - Bobos. But if you want that hot pink and purple color, then I guess you need to stick with the mop head variety. I just got frustrated with how much space they took up and how unreliable they were in blooming.

@@marygarlough1589 thanks Mary, I like to see some color at least some flowers 😂. I think I should plant lace cap and Annabelle or something that willl performs and reliable.

What a beautiful garden...this is actually the first video that I have seen that has almost all of the same plants I have. I have never seen anyone talk about meadow rue and bugbane before. Thankyou for going through all your plants with us. How do you like you Japanese Anemone? Do you find that it is difficult to control...I had taken mine out and potted it because I was worried that it would take over my garden...
@marygarlough15893 жыл бұрын
You are so right - since that video, I have removed all my Japanese Anemone . It was coming up everywhere. I had great difficulty removing it even though I dug deeply. I ended up having to paint leaves with RoundUp to kill it. I don't think all varieties of anemone are so aggressive but this one was a real problem. I have also removed my bugbane! It just seemed to get tired over the past couple years and wasn't performing well. So next Spring I need to replace it which will be a challenge. Thanks for watching!
