Years of bad habits, cheap parts, people trying to save every penny, cracking eggs in the radiator and DIY. Now we must use specific parts and only get serviced at the dealer or you're not covered. I had a 2017 1L ecoboost fiesta up until recently. Serviced every 8 and a half to 9K miles as I do about 11K a year at my local garage ( myself, family and friends all go to the same garage and have done for year's). Full service as required and as of February this year, the cars wet belt failed destroying the vac pump and destroying the turbo. The car is out of warranty, I am now left to pick up the pieces. The fact of the matter is this... I always go to the same garage and have a service done as required. 0 cheap parts, component are used. All OEM and all that Ford recommends. The fact that you said these engines fail due to cheap servicing is quite insulting as ive always looked after my car and took my car to a reputable garagle. Theirs a reason why Fords parent company has recalled all the 1L ecoboost in the USA. Nothing to do with cheap servicing, the engine itself is a cheap nasty design on Fords part. Nothing more. I also didn't realise it was the 1st of April... just assumed it was since you said " pretty damn good engine". Certainly nothing good about these engines, unless if you enjoy seeing them fail.

Nice to see some balanced commentary regarding this engine. I feel there's something of an echo chamber relating to the wet belt issues and a distorted level of hate towards the engine as a result. Easy to say when you haven't suffered an issue yourself though to be fair. As you say, there are millions of them our there and whilst there's no shortage of failures I too am pretty confident that regular servicing (actually, probably just regular oil changes) is sufficient mitigation against the risk. I've just done the belt on my wife's 2013 Fiesta - it is 10 years old and done 75k miles - and whilst the belt surface certainly looked different (small cracks) compared to the new one the oil pick up strainer had barely anything in it so whilst degradation had arguably started we were still some way off catastrophic failure. I have have every confidence in it giving us many more years service and overall - car and engine - it's been a great buy.

You forgot to mention the cost of replacing the wet belt. Its typically a minimum of £1000 to replace which on an economy car like a 2013 Ford Fiesta is insanity. The car is barely worth £3000 as it is. By the next belt change it will be uneconomical to repair especially if other stuff needs doing. These Ecoboom motors are throw away engines. The wet belt combines the worst aspects of a timing belt and the worst aspects of a timing chain together to give you the ultimate ticking time bomb that doesn't even tick. People who've fully serviced their cars have been screwed over by Ford and these shit engines. If you haven't been screwed over count yourselves very lucky.

I'll stick to my Toyota Auris and its 1.2T with its 10k oil intervals and a timing chain which likely will never need replacing but even if it did it would take far longer for it to need it than the welt belt and the cost would still be similiar.

The total brake failure that my son experienced while coming off the slip road at Junction 10 on the M23 motorway was terrifying and he (and his apprentice) were fortunate not to have been involved in a major accident at this busy junction. The cause of the failure is well documented - the use of the wet belt inside the EcoBoost engine causes delamination over time. Debris from it eventually clogs the pick up pipe and vacuum pump which then fails causing the brake pedal to go hard. The brake pedal simply cannot be depressed to slow the vehicle no matter how hard you try. He is self-employed and relies on his Ford Transit Custom van everyday. It is currently at a Hendy Ford garage awaiting a goodwill gesture from Ford - as it is a few months out of warranty - yet the wet belt was not due to be changed for another 30,000 miles at the earliest.The current estimated cost of the repairs are £1,800! In addition, the failure of the wet belt may have caused damage to the turbo and the cost to replace it would be £1,000 according to Hendy. He has had the vehicle regularly serviced - using the specified oil and grade. Ford have a duty to undertake the repairs - and cover any additional damages resulting from the delamination of the wet belt but they are digging their heels in - offering a fraction of the repair cost. Avoid this engine at all costs - especially your life.

EXACTLY, EXACTLY, EXACTLY...! But..., because lying is in the human's nature like breathing air, those who whine about how their Ecoboost died and stuff like that do either one of the following or maybe all wrong: 1. Poor/cheap and/or wrong grade oil and change it very late according to it's quality. 2. The oil pickup screen (which is usually responsible for the death of all Ecoboosts) is almost NEVER CHECKED by the idiots who think that they've bought an Ecoboost and there's no need to verify anything on a wet belt technology and simply let that oil pickup screen clog up..., the oil pump can't ensure enough oil pressure anymore, especially during cold starts when the oil is thick anyway and is almost zero flowing through the clogged screen and the engine wears itself up day after day until the rod bearings start making noises (the engine is called dead for that). 3. Not letting THIS PARTICULAR ENGINE idle for at least 1 minute during cold weather (below 5 Celsius or so). If these wankers who want performance but never want to do their job correctly and take correct care of this engine would stop blaming the engine for their mistakes, this engine can last a lot in their hands even if raced all day long.
@gigapig233 ай бұрын
Is there way to check the oil pickup?
@Maverickf22flyer3 ай бұрын
@@gigapig23 2 ways. One quite easy and one that takes some hours and for which you also need a high temperature sealant to apply on the oil pan before re-installing. The easy way is to use a borescope through the drain plug of the oil pan after draining the oil and inspect the pickup for clogging. The harder way would be to take down the oil pan and inspect the oil pickup in a better way and also be able to clean it, but this requires to also take down the catalytic converter which wasn't too hard for me, except that you must wiggle it downwards between the engine and radiator after taking out all it's bolts (one 10mm is hidden on the left side of the cat) and rotate it as necessary in order to take it out and there are two 15mm nuts that connect the end pipe of the cat to the rest of the exhaust and those 2 nuts can be a pain in the but to get down if they are very rusty. I had to cut mine down with a small angled grinder, take the cat down, hammer out the 2 original pressed bolts and buy 2 comparable bolts and nuts in order to mount it back and that was it. If you are lucky and manage to get those 2 rusty nuts out without cutting them down, you should definitely apply some copper or some good quality very high temp grease on them when you mount them back in order to not have them so hard to unscrew the next time again. This harder way took me a couple of hours (I didn't rush with it) from start to finish but I had indeed took out some rubber stuff (small pieces of belt) that was partially blocking the oil pickup. Don't forget to buy some oil pan resistant sealant and apply on the engine side of the pan (I did this way) or if it's easier, apply it on the pan itself after cleaning (but carefully, not touch the applied seal accidentally when moving to install it) before putting the pan back or you'll have oil leaks from the pan. Although I wrote a lot of details, the harder way is what I prefer anyway because I have much better results. Cheers! Ford goes further!
