My high school symphonic band ( Havre, Montana) played this for festival adjudication in May 1967. It was thrilling to perform at that time....now with 55 years of listening to great music..I am not quite sure of the quality of this piece...

While searching for ideas on Sursum Corda, I found this wonderful performance. After discovering how it came into existence, I thought it deserved my praise. Music education of this caliber is to be commended. Many of these young musicians are now certainly established in their careers. Some probably are music teachers keeping the education alive. Well done.
R.I.P. MR. LEGA! YOU WILL BE TRULY MISSED. CLASS OF 94'

What was JT's mascot before they got the Steelmen statue from the 1933 Chicago World's Fair? My dad ('37) would know but I ('73) never asked.

The reason it sounds as though it's in E may be a recording thing. The recording machine may have had something with it that causes the pitch to be higher.

I was one of the Euphonium players in this band...this was my fav performance and fav song...all credit should goto Teddy Lega, a Lion amongst men. He took a buncha misfits year after year and not only created magic, but touched us all. We were far from perfect, and individually won almost nothing...but together we were great.

Class of 2001. We performed this recording at the U of I superstate competition my junior or senior year of high school I can't remember which year it was.I am on trumpet. This is another one of my favorite pieces we performed under the baton of our legendary director Mr. Ted Lega.

Steve Yanchick I think he made us sight read it a couple years after when he was helping us at West. After his "retirement" (he still hasn't put down his baton lol) he ran woodwind sectionals a few times a week, and just being in the same room as him was an experience in itself. Any time I smell cigarettes and cologne it takes me back and reminds me of how tremendous a music educator he was.

I was at west and know the Lega family very well. I never had the pleasure of being under his direction but we had him sub in a few times during rehearsals and we did play this sight reading and I loved that 1st trumpet part. I know the song so I went hard lol so fun. Class of 08

Proud JT high school band alum class of 2001. We played this piece my freshman year 98 as honor band at the U of I superstate competition. I am on trumpet. This was my favorite piece. I remember countless hours in the band room trying to perfect this song. When we finally reached what we thought was perfection and made it through the piece landing perfectly on the final note, The Greatest director and teacher of all time Mr. Ted Lega would simply say "something like that". He taught me that perfection should never be mentally achieved or claimed. Greatness and perfection should be something you are always striving for... This way you never stop pushing yourself to become better. He did not just teach us about the notes on the page. He thought us about the music that was not written.

It is just a rumor that this piece is so glad and optimistic because its composer thought of Stalin's death whilst composing but actually its use was for the anniversary of the revolution.
