My mother just sent me the link. She grew up in Nördlingen after WWII after being expelled from her home region. I myself have fond memories of this medieval jewel. Thanks for retrieving this old movie portrait!

Thanks very much for watching and for sharing your comments. Indeed, Nördlingen remains a jewel today with its circular town wall completely intact, surrounding the same buildings seen in the film. The daily life there and in the village of Holheim, though, has changed. Through the film we can see how it was.

@@RobertFKleinberg The date was in the read more section so I missed it. I stand corrected. One of my aunts had a store that accepted pawn on route 70 between Geronimo and the San Carlos Reservation. The Apache Chief banged on their door at night wanting more liquor. They would not open up so he pulled the heads off of all their Rhode Island Red chickens. I saw the aftermath the next day. I almost was able to obtain an 1800's Winchester octagon barreled rifle that was abandoned as pawn. But the same day the owner discovering my interest came in and payed the necessary to get it back. Thanks for saving this historic film.

What a miserable existence. And just think - they are electing to live like this (since they are free to escape the reservation). In advanced civilizations art generally generally appreciates in value. I've never seen any of this stuff on Pawn Stars or American Pickers.

@@divindave6117 It's been many years since Indians were forced to follow U.S. Government policies. So that is a specious excuse. In fact, Indians get preferential treatment that ordinary citizens don't enjoy., like operating casinos on free land. Everyone would do better to live in the present instead of blaming the past.

Hello Robert, are you his grandson? I own his editing table. It was given to me by a man in Santa Cruz. I'm not sure who he got it from but I've kept it for many years. I was a photojournalist and anthropologist. Thank you for posting these films. I've enjoyed them very much and it makes me happy to know that many of them were done on this editing table.

Thank you very much for this message! Ernest Kleinberg was my father. I knew his equipment well. I assume you mean the dark brown wood table with two horizontal film plates on it. Yes, nearly every film he finished was put together on that table. And I mean "put together" literally! It is hard to imagine given the video tools we have now - for his films, every shot was cut on a separate piece of 16mm film. Then each and every shot he chose, long or short, was glued by his own hand onto the master reel, working on that table. After that master reel was done, he then edited the multitrack sound (which he had put together on 16mm audio tape) with the visual film on his editing machine. I hope viewers appreciate the level of craftsmanship built into all of his films. Thank you again. ps If you ever decide you want to get rid of that table, please contact me.

Why does the narrator keep saying 'our country'? He's not Dutch by the sound of it. (He cannot pronounce simple Dutch words properly.)

The narrator as introduced in the film was Sam Bakker (his real name), an engineer with the Netherlands Water Ministry.
