I believe Prince suffered from heavy Social Anxiety. He constructed his world in a way where he could have 100% control over who was in his circle and how the public perceived him. Most of his enigmatic qualities and eccentricities can be attributed to his Social Awkwardness. I don't think who he was on stage was an alter ego, that was the real him. When he was around people that he wasn't used to that's where he put his walls up. His awkwardness towards the interviewer (and the veil over his face) gives that away. You see how comfortable and loose he is around his wife and band mates. He didn't speak a word in the interview because he was that anxious to open up to her. Interviews were not his element, the stage was. His best interviews were with media figures who he was already well acquainted with.

Prince is hiding behind Mayte in this interview.. He's using her as a mask to hide behind.. He doesn't want to face the public or interview naked or vulnerable, lol.. It must be nice to have a very pretty bodyguard that he can control.. She looks bigger than he of course so hey why not.. Well he uses male bodyguards for physical difficulties he doesn't know to handle and it looks like he uses Mayte to hide behind for verbal situations or tough rude interviewers he doesn't have the emotional maturity to handle..lol THIS IS THE PRINCE I MISSED IN THE 80s AND 90s!! Prince (Rogers Nelson) RIP< was full on fighting for his career, freedom of expression, and even his name ! Bruce Springsteen was in court fighting for some control over his music, after his third album "Born to Run". John Fogerty, was sued for plagerizing his own song, "Run through the Jungle" because he did not own it and " Old Man Down the Road" was structured similarly! So many musicians we have all loved throughout the 20th century, got small amounts of the monies generated by sales, publishing and performance royalties. ZZ Top was on the record label "London" records, and the story going round at the time, was that after the album "Tejas", they wanted to re-sign with a better contract. They were facing a sit out period of 3 years, (no new product) evidently the five albums owed wasn't all, there was a time owed before re=negotiating could take place. London put out a "Hits" collection, which violated the contract, then that allowed ZZ Top to "free agent" and negotiate in less than 3 years, so to speak, and finally go with WB records. The fact that music ownership is still called "publishing" is an obsolete term, (it refers to the paper printed for pianos in homes, which was how folks bought music before audio recording was invented). The ZZ Top story, may not be accurate, it is the way I heard it at the time, as a record store employee in Houston TX. Apologies if it was not exactly correct.
