I saw this overlooked film for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and I would now include it among my favorite films. Love the nationalistic, simplistic storytelling. Robert Duvall and Tess Harper were terrific.

In my humble opinion, one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history…… this movie is so subtle, so quiet, and as a born and bred Southerner, so in the pocket… this movie never gets old for me!

We can't "trust happiness" because everything, in this life, is temporary. True "happiness" or perhaps.. peace.. prevails when we realize that.

A underrated and sadly forgotten movie . But a absolutely Incredible scene . It’s stayed with me since the first time I saw it . It’s not really like it’s a movie character saying it . He made his character so real that it really felt like you where watching one of your own family members say it . I mean it truly resonates with you . Duvall had a Lotta great performances in his movie career . However None as phenomenal as the one in this movie .

This scene cuts to the quick. It captures what everyone feels but can't admit verbally or internally. Happiness is a vapor. There is just enough there to get a sense of it, but if you reach and try to grasp it - it's gone. People will ruin their lives chasing it. Chemical dependence is a good example of that. I like the way Duvall comes across in this scene. He plays it as a man who is on the edge of absolute emotional break-down but he's holding on to the edge by his fingernails. What I'm about to say is not very positive or uplifting but I hope for those who read this it can/will be interpreted as just reality and not pessimism: Life is more about set back than advancements. You'll experience more loss than wins. I think if you know and recognize this, you can have joy and a greater sense of happiness in life. - - “Anyone who imagines that bliss is normal is going to waste a lot of time running around shouting that he’s been robbed. The fact is that most putts don’t drop, most beef is tough, most children grow up to just be people, most successful marriages require a high degree of mutual toleration, most jobs are more often dull than otherwise. Life is like an old time rail journey…delays…sidetracks, smoke, dust, cinders and jolts, interspersed only occasionally by beautiful vistas and thrilling burst of speed. The trick is to thank the Lord for letting you have the ride.” ― Jenkin Lloyd Jones

Beautifully put and absolutely true. You can spend your twenties chasing the highs of your teens only to end up 30 and alone. I think it happens all the time. I got married at 28 and was divorced by 37, even more alone than ever because I never accepted reality. I've found happiness in the years since, in a simplistic, logical and moral existence.

That's the beauty of this whole movie: unstated or understated thoughts and actions. At every point in this movie where it could follow the cliches and formulas of Hollywood, it does the opposite. In a scene like this where Tess Harper would typically have something emotional to say and dramatic music would begin, she walks away and there is no music. There are no scenes of the wedding. When Mac gets angry and stays out all night in frustration and returns the next morning, there is no blow-up. It goes down to even the child actor. A friend asks him if he loves Mac and instead of tears welling up and the music kicking in, he matter-of-factly states that yes, he does. It's a tremendous screenplay, with great cinematography and great acting.
