my mate went on a tour of northern ireland and when they patrolled streets they were spat at and the IRA planted bombs on telegraph poles and one killed some soldiers and they put his bits in bin bags and people came out cheering it proves how evil the irish are

This is nothing but leftist BBC propaganda. Notice that everything the paras said was contradicted by "civilians". Of course! They were living under the threat of murder by IRA thugs and had to continue to live in Northern Ireland under that threat. Consequently, they said whatever the IRA wanted them to say: "Our Irish marchers were peaceful, innocent choirboys who wanted to give flowers and cookies to the British soldiers." They were all lying.

It is worth remembering that the British Army in Ulster in the troubles routinely patrolled in a four man "Brick", led by a junior NCO. Remember the Corporal killings in 1988 at the funeral of IRA man Kevin Brady. If you were being stoned, bottled, petrol bombed and rioted on by tens of rioters, wouldn't you feel threatened, confused, frightened? The whole thing was indeed a tragedy. It certainly proved to be the best recruiting Sergeant for the IRA of the entire troubles. Undoubtedly SOME innocent people died or were wounded that day died unlawfully. The IRA had declared "free Derry" a no go area to the Army and RUC for some good while before Bloody Sunday. Undoubtedly they orchestrated the rioting at William Street that led to the subsequent arrest operation by The Paras. I think.both they AND the IRA were culpable in the tragic events of the day.

@bfc3057 It is a very probable description of what actually transpired. It isn't about sincerity or insincerity...I have no particular axe to grind. It is, however, of interest to me to try to imagine and make sense of the wider picture behind events on that tragic day. The result of the shootings was escalation and increased conflict that lasted nearly another 30 years and cost over 3000 lives. This single tragic event was a major cause of increased conflict, and the beginning of a quest for justice and understanding that still remains unfulfilled to this day. That isnt exclusively about the IRA or the Paras, but it is inclusively 100% tragic and a lamentable incident. I have sympathy for everyone involved, in any capacity, who suffered on or remains traumatised by the chaotic and violent events of a bewildering, confusing, frightening and ultimatrly totally tragic day. They say the first casualty of war or conflict is truth. On that day it certainly was.
@ianjarrett2724

@bfc3057 You don't seem to be as objective as you might be either. Nobody has a monopoly on conjecture, truth, or wisdom. But I'm fairly clear that the tragedy of that day was almost certainly a total cause and effect outcome. Rioters and Paratroopers were both 'stoked up' and acted on instinct, not reason. The result was deadly errors of judgement amid chaotic confusion, error, fear, and mistakes. The lack of fire control by The Army was undoubtedly the main, highly questionable event. But, they maintained that they came under attack. Perhaps the whole truth will never be known. The apportionment of blame after 50 years is virtually impossible. It is, in any event, relatively unimportant. The real tragedy was the chain of events that led to the horrific outcome of death and injury.

Why was the role the IRA played in Bloody Sunday never fully investigated? The whole enquiry was one sided and never took into account the British army’s defence. If this was supposed to be an enquiry to find the truth then the role the IRA played is vital as they where responsible for starting the gunfire. And also the actions of the many rioters. It seems the events have been completely rewritten from start to finish to point the finger at the British army and please the IRA supporting nationalists.
