Wow, I just moved from Barrie and I never knew the Canadian came through there. My father works on the GO Trains that operate in Barrie now. With the way the city has expanded, continuing Via Rail service from Toronto then further north is just smart. But, politics right?

VIA has implied explicitly that they have no desire in returning to Barrie. Even if the track and infrastructure was still there they wouldn't go back or through. People there wanting the Canadian can board at Toronto or Washago. There was whispered rumours of a flag stop in Newmarket on the Bala sub near Davis Dr being made but I haven't heard anything about it in a while.

@@northlanderdude It could and it should. Run up the GO Newmarket Sub, with stops in Newmarket and Barrie, then fix up roughly seven miles of the Barrie-Collingwood Municipal Railway to get to the connection with the CP MacTier Sub at Utopia, and then run north to Sudbury from there. Usage of the MacTier Sub from Utopia to Sudbury would also allow the Canadian to service the station in Downtown Sudbury, instead of the mobile home station 10km away. A quick backup move would then be needed to get back to the Bala Sub, but it would be worth it.
