I don't have dyslexia (as far as I know), but sometimes, if I'm reading on a white page, the space between the letters turn black (kind of like those illusions with the black lines with a white square at the intersections that make it look like a black circle appears in the square)

In high school, they were asking each student to read a paragraph loud. While I was reading a word, the next word was moving or out of focus and also while reading I was afraid of missing a word so I was checking the previous word if I read it or missed it while looking at the shaking words. I always thought it was because of my eyes and I got eye glasses even I didn't need them.

I have the 3d problem. To the point I didn't even register it was a simulation at first and just thought it was my eyes. I also get where the white in text almost is like a bright light and can make it hard to focus on letters. White text on black or a colored filter really help me.

I started re-reading comics because I couldn’t read block text. Through this I developed a love of the medium. The way text is broken up in comics makes it easy (or at least easier) to read. If you are a dyslexic person who would like to read, I recommend checking out comic books. There are comic books for everybody. It’s not just men in tights punching each other. Here’s a few publishers to get you started (some are no longer around): Fantagraphics Kitchen Sink Tundra Knockabout Drawn & Quarterly Dark Horse 2000AD DC Thomson Image Dark Horse There are so many good ones to name, and that’s before you get into small press, indie comics, underground comix, wimmen’s comix, manga… The list goes on. Go read some comics.

I don't have dyslexia, but i struggle with doing those questions in my head because I have aphantasia (cant create visual images in my mind). Just an interesting thing I thought I'd mention - incase you didn't realize not everyone can see their thoughts. :) But anyways this is helpful, pretty sure my husband has struggled with this his whole life & glad to finally start understanding him better. :)

All of these happened to me as a child. The thing is that all happens in the mind, this 2D representation doesn’t fully explain the fear that goes into the child’s mind. I thought I was going crazy!

Michael, thank u so much. As an American teaching English, Geography, math and science to 2nd graders in Cambodia I love my job. However most kids/schools here don't have the money, like we do in The States to have specialists to help kids with dyslexia or whatever learning issues they may have. Several of my students need glasses, I assume this because they read with the book inches from their face. Anyway, I have a wonderfully smart and artistic girl, Sophia, she's repeating 2nd grade over again because of her inability to read and is getting NO special help, so it's basically useless. She can't read her finals so how can she pass an exam! But I think I figured out that one....more later. She cannot read to save her life and it drives me nuts because there's no support of any kind. My number one goal I tell the kids and the parents during parent/teacher day is that my number one goal is to make their child the best possible English reader and speaker I can because that is the best way to insure that they have as much of an advantage when they get out of school and have to work. I read with them daily, reading maybe about 60-90 seconds per child. But Sophia cannot read to save her life. She basically just repeats what I say......and when I stop will often just make up words that are similar to what the actual word should be. Sophia FLUENT in English, if u met her u would swear she was a native English speaker. So anyway thank u for this video. I have been watching videos trying to figure out to help Sophia, no one has ever said "No white paper!" "No fluorescent lights!" "Large text". Is there a "better" color paper? Or does it not matter? Black paper white text? Red paper white text......or basically anything other than white with black text. I will create some stories on non white paper with black text and see how it goes. We'll also read outside with natural light and see how that goes. All rooms are fluorescent lighting. So a few days I was like......none of the finals are about reading ability....so I'll just read the finals to her. Not sure how this will work out but I hate seeing such a bright star receive no extra and much needed help at all. Thanx again! Best, Todd....ps.....sorry for the short novel

Very helpful..I will be tutoring a dyslexic child of class 7.Though she managed to get to class 7,by writing only objective questions avoiding the longer questions.. your videos will help me in helping her write the longer answers..I will definitely focus on the suggestions you've given in this video .

Is this meant to be some kind of joke!?! 😂 Pictures you say, let the brain work it's own way around a problem instead! My brain did it subconciously! 😉 A phonological dyslexic brain can do fine without pictures! I am living proof of that! I have had grade A grades all my life, and have phonological dyslexia my self! 😱 I have never realide on pictures!

1st 4th 5th & 6th are much too familiar to me - Getting through college took about 4 times as long reading studies as other students. I read my first book the summer between 5th and 6th grade. Never ask me to read anything in a moving car or plane - I can't.

I related to a lot of these. Disappearing letters or words, the word shifting in waves, everything shaking around and needing to look at it longer in order for it to hold still. One they missed was letters appearing in one place switched with another, then looking again and they're switched back. Like R3J 2P0 becomes R2J 3P0. It literally looks this way with my own eyes. Then after looking at it again, it switches back and after I look at it a third time I'm pretty sure which one is correct.

I hate how many people just think dyslexia means we mix letters around. When in reality it looks like words are literally moving on the page. For me it’s mainly the 3d or shaking. But sometimes I notice words or letters getting bigger or smaller than the rest on the page.

Dyslexia is not the same as Scotopic Sensitivity. Nope. Not at all. A dyslexic person could also have scotopic sensitivity, but it is separate from dyslexia.

I have visual dyslexia. This video is a bit exaggerated but other than that It’s accurate. My most common symptom is words, sentences and paragraphs moving, blurring, overlapping, flickering, and doubling. Sometimes I put the wrong word as well. Like change vs changed or love vs live

wow. I just assumed that was normal. I get the wavy thing, the words disappearing and the radial blur thing oh and the words shaking thing. I just assumed that I had to "focus really hard" and "try and get into the rhythm of reading" But usually the way it looks I loose track of where I'm at. Whats blowing my mind right now is that, there are people that don't experience these.

For me personally, it doesn't feel that bad but there's way more mental games at play than visual issues. My visual issues come rarely but are like this.. Large bodies of text stretch mildly so words are taller then shrink, this happens repeatedly and a quite smooth effect. Or when I get a really bad dyslexic mental blip language/thought pauses, my eyes lock focus on the text/word and I get 2 frames, one mildly titled to the left and the other to the right and it rapidly flicks between them. The biggest issues for me is the pauses in thought, I know what's needed to be wrote or read but my mind doesn't like it being put in language. Words I know well randomly become unknowns like I've never seen it before and become unable to sound it out. Any mental blip causes me to have to reread the sentence because the train of thought has gone. As I've aged and learnt my own methods of learning, language has become way less of an issue, at 25 something just clicked and felt I could articulate and express my intellect more. If you're worried about a child's learning or your own just remember dyslexics have an amazing thought process that link subjects in ways neurotypical minds usually don't and by looking at other comments I can see they express themselves quite well with language regardless. I am extremely analytical and I owe dyslexia to every strength and speed I take to new subjects.
