“Knew them all from Boston to Dubuque” This line always cracks me up because I imagine Dubuque Iowa being the cutoff for baseball. Like someone drives into Des Moines and goes “wait a minute… what the hell is baseball? Who the hell is scooter? Why can’t I remember?!”

I really dig this song, but as a casual fan, why weren't there any Red Sox players mentioned? He mentions "Boston to Dubuque" but there isn't a single Boston player mentioned.

Baseball probably reached its peak of popularity at this time--the pre-expansion era of the 1950s. Everyone knew these players. Everyone watched the World Series. Fifty million people would tune in on a weekday afternoon to see a World Series game. When MLB started discarding its traditions, it slowly lost its viewership.

Who was the player obviously airbrushed out of the first picture on the video to the right of Duke Snider (#4), and Willie Mays (#24)? It was Joe DiMaggio (#5) was also in the photograph, but he was left out of the song and airbrushed from the record's picture sleeve! His name couldn't be fit into the song, so Terry Cashman just focused on Willie, Mickey, and the Duke! The song was released during the 1981 baseball strike (June 12-Aug. 8). All-Star Game on the 9th, regular games resumed on the 10th, after 706 games were lost. 38% of the schedule. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talkin%27_Baseball

I think it's safe to say that anyone who grew up in that best baseball era of the mid-'50s to the late-'60s has this as their favorite baseball song! Unless it is your team song that Terry Cashman also made for each of the 26 teams then in MLB! Except for when the song jumps to the 1980s, all those previous outstanding players mentioned have now passed when Willie did on June 18, the last of that golden era. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1981_in_baseball#Major_league_Baseball_final_standings en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talkin%27_Baseball

God Bless all of them that passed. Willie, Mickey, the Duke, Stan the Man, the splendid splinter. The 70's Red Sox Yankees were great match ups. Too bad the Sox didn't win one for Yaz. and maybe the Yanks should have won in 81.

Back when Baseball was America's Pastime. Before football took over with all the $. My dad was a fan & he made me & later my son a fan. He would walk my son & his friends home from elementary school & they would watch the Cubs on WGN while he did his homework because he had a Little League game or practice that night.
