There are transparent heat shrink films that you attached to the frame of a window with double sided tape and shrink to stretch it smoothly with a hair dryer in order to better insulate and seal your windows for winter. I wonder if you could use that to close off the gap...

Nice job brother! just a couple of things: if you had to do this on a secondstory window with no way to stand outside and slide that unit back into its case, it would need a different approach...also, not everyone has one of those saws for the cuts but I guess a circular saw would do for the plywood... if you got the tools and its accessible from ground level, looks good and came out Nice!

Something came to mind @ 2:35 when you shaved some off the board. At first I thought maybe you were sawing a gap X inches deep and blade width wide so that the 2x4 would be able to pinch inward and you could mallet it down into the crevasse. Same concept as trimming the actual side, put probably more forgiving to saw a 75% gap down the length of the 2x4 so it can pinch inward.

You're supposed to bolt a steel shelf to the wall outside the window to support it but many people just let the flange rest against the window frame and window sash or where the sliding window panel rests against the machine which is why we always hear stories of a window AC being dropped onto a parked car or the sidewalk below. I suspect with this video, it's the latter. The saddle type air conditioners would be my preference even though that's more window space to seal up. There's also the U type AC with a deep groove between the indir air handler and evaporator coils and the outdoor compressor and condenser coils but with sliding and casement windows, they should still have a supporting shelf of some kind though these could just be temporary braces attached to the bottom of the outdoor compressor and condenser portion.

I don’t know either! I just can’t grasp the concept of how it’s going to be safe! Someone’s going to install it for me this weekend but I don’t even know where to begin with the right supplies. A brace? Plexiglass? What size? Can I get it pre-cut? Do we get rid of our screen? Is it worth it since it’s probably going to cool down in about a month? I’m a nervous wreck about it. Help!

In Australia, to improve adhesion to the substrate, it is recommended to wet the area before applying the foam. After a while it does tend to go brittle , i suggest painting the foam.
