While respecting the achievemnets of the Callaway team, it doesn't count for the "Production Car" top speed record, as it wasn't a car they built, it was a car they modified based on a production car. "Outright street legal" top speed record, they shattered the crap outta that!!

The operative wording is world’s fastest street car but not the world’s fastest car on the street. In 1938 German race car driver Bernd Rosemeyer drove the Auto Union (now Audi) streamliner to the unheard of speed of 268.432 mph on a stretch of autobahn between Frankfurt and Darmstadt. Never before had anyone driven as fast on a public road. It took 72 years for a Bugatti Veyron Super Sport to break that record in 2010 going 270mph...

Several years ago I saw and heard one of those monsters in my area , you could feel the ground half mile away shake , the rumble of the engine nasty - we referred it to be the mustang eater . 80s- 2000s . Haven’t heard anything since the two sightings then .

Bruh, someone who has the money to be able to afford an R35 GTR doesn't care how they did it. They care a out the fact that they can make the same modifications to their to achieve such a laptime with that specific car. It's taking an F1 car around nordchleife with a full downforce rear wing, and then the same F1 car going around the traxk with a trimmed down rear wing. The fact ia it's still an F1 car. If I had an F1 car, I have the ability to choose from 2 different rear wings which will give me better or worse laptimes.

Excellent trip down memory lane for me. As a college student in 1988 I deeply enjoyed rubbing it in the faces of the German students that a road legal Corvette was faster than anything built in Europe.

Why does nobody remember "Conan", the Corvette? Early 90's they put a V~12 in a Corvette. They had to move the firewall back several inches. I remember they got at least 212mph out of it.

This car was an absolute legend that even most so called "car guys" might not have heard of. While most have heard of a Callaway Corvette the Sledgehammer was the Godfather of speed. A true testament to American engineering. Thank you for making such a comprehensive (and compact) documentary about an American legend, Reeves Callaway.

You'd think that engineers would have figured out how to reinforce the bottom end of an engine much sooner. Using a ladder shaped brace for the bottom main bearings. Instead they were just adding more bolts 🔩 going from 2 to 4 bolt bearing caps.

These cars is amazing but I live in Australia and the speed limit on our straight motorways is only 110kph and there is no chance in the near future that the law will be changing that. So if I am not a racing car driver on a track, I'm well and truely stuffed. But then I suppose I could join the millions of Australian who are just dreaming tyre kickers.
