There might be a partial explanation for this. There is something called "cognitive load" or "social cognitive interference". When a person is speaking to someone they find highly attractive, their brain may allocate more resources to the mental effort involved in navigating the social interaction. It would have been interesting if he could have been interviewed afterwards to get his take on the encounter.
