Mill workers in the North West refused to spin cotton from the southern states in the US and endured great hardship and hunger as a result, they were publicly thanked by Abraham Lincoln. The same mill owners sacrificed Lancashire cotton workers by creating the Asbestos industry, which Rochdale is now infamous for. The powerful would rather no one knew about slavery or the killer fibre asbestos. I worked in Rochdale's asbestos factory (the largest in Europe). “Workers of the World, Unite. You have nothing to lose but your chains!”

What an absolutely beautiful song that is (and, I must say beautiully performed). I sit here, in my home in Greece, with a tear in my eye (Aye?.... aye!). I am originally from Oldham, and have seen these lads several times performing throughout the borough. As they say, you can take the lad out of Oldham etc... etc.

Its just such a pity that the Islamic followers now do not realize or want to share the hospitality that was shown to them,but would rather take over the place and be generally hostile and elitist.They should never have been allowed to spoil our heritage but they have.

I have to agree that is sad to see old ways overtaken. I came across your comment while browsing round and enjoying listening to the Oldham dialect and accent as spoken and sung by the Oldham Tinkers. I was brought up in the area but now live with the heathens down south. There was a feature on TV recently about the death of Cockney spoken London, so it's not just in Oldham.

@madamemarmot5 жыл бұрын
Steeleye Span recorded it as Four Loom Weaver - sorry I forget which album, but it's a bit easier to understand (more standard language). Also, you can see a print version in local dialect in Elizabeth Gaskell's novel Mary Barton. There it's referred to as Oldham Weaver.
