10:05 I am a veterinarian and the reason why horses, donkeys etc can sleep upright is that as equines, they have a ligament that lets them stand and relax upright called "Lacertus Fibrosus"Other creatures lack this ligament and cannot sleep/relax/rest upright.

Maybe they weren't breaking their thumbs because they were counting on their gauntlets and chose to hold it forward for that bit of extra range. Pure inexperienced speculation, but however maybe a close look at historical examples of gauntlets might shed light on it. I doubt they were holding lances forward expecting their thumbs to be broken. It could also be a choice to take the risk for that bit of extra range, or maybe a different grip. If you put your thumb against the first knuckle of your forefinger you can still grip things pretty tight.

It leads me to wonder how the lords who owned the land would have dealt with the peasants when the weather went bad and food got scarce. Would they be total dicks like "you still owe me X and FU and your family" or lighten up or maybe even release some of their stored grain back to the peasantry to help them survive? Assuming they weren't in danger of starvation themselves of course as when it comes to the wire human nature is to look out for yourself and your own before others. I imagine it varied.

Servile is a nicely sanitized word for slave. I fully expect the word "servile" to increase in use in America's latest re-ignition of the American Civil War (which never really ended, as the initiators of that war were never hung - they staged a comeback in 1877).

I think it's cool that you include "fantasy" hypotheticals both as a marketing strategy (given that most people on KZbin are young and drawn to your content through gaming) and because it is increasingly difficult to get people to be interested in authentic historical topics these days.

lol, no unlikely as embalming was not a thing in Western Europe, nor was manufactured food a thing either. If you mean formaldehydes, it was unknown in the period, though miniscule traces might have been present in natural ingredients.

Hi! I’m currently writing a fantasy medieval book and I was wondering how did people transport their stuff on horse back? Does it look the same as it does today? And do you know how much weigh a horse could transport on a long journey? And let’s say my characters need to flee as fast as they can, do you think it would be possible for them to simply hop on their horse with the satchels but without the saddle? (Just wondering if they could escape without having to take the time to saddle their horses but still keep all their belongings) And your videos are amazingly helpful and so full knowledge! Thanks for doing this:)

Well, on my visit to China I went to what is believed to be the oldest restaurant in China. 🤔 The structure isn’t quite what we assume. It’s a bit more like a food court. The food preparation occurs in stalls around the outside walls with a central eating space. No one knows if they might have been previously rented. (Management is common to all in recorded history but we have written records for less than half the existence.) I wonder if during the early years of its existence it was possible to stay the night. Some of the lodging arrangements in China remain fairly informal. In the rural areas there’s a tradition of “guest houses” but while the modern ones are purpose built and charge fixed fees the traditional houses were simply abandoned houses used for the purpose because it was bad luck to leave buildings empty too long and as such there was no specific fee charged for the use.

My mum and dad run a pub that was an old inn, owned by the Earl of Shrewsbury. It had a sty for pigs and other livestock, which was connected to the main building and is now ironically the restaurant, as well as a full coach house and stabling which is still in use today for a herd of alpacas now haha.

Your take away from this shouldn’t be „peasants weren’t slaves“ but rather „the average worker today is worse off than the average medieval peasant“.

The Romans created citizens from army conscripts after they had served for a period of time (quite a long one though - decades I think) so this idea could have hung around through to the Medieval period.

It doesn't surprise me medieval people had better teeth than modern day humans. Processed sugar didn't become widely available in Europe until the C19th. Nowadays, there's sugar in almost every processed foods people buy.

In the ancient Mediterranean (Mesopotamia, Greece, etc.), the word used to refer to a slave was the same word used to refer to workers in general, from employees to servants. Slaves were not necessarily prisoners in chains, as happened during the colonization of the Americas. The "free men" were the owners of the land, while the title of nobility was not as common as it became thousands of years later. Also, "medieval" isn't very accurate. In the Visigothic Kingdom, for example, the native Iberian population had a different status to the Visigoths and were basically slaves.
@charles2521
@charles2521 2 күн бұрын
Another detail: In the ancient Mediterranean, some people even sold themselves into slavery because, believe it or not, they had some benefits.
@charles2521
@charles2521 2 күн бұрын
The last detail I forgot to mention is that slaves weren't necessarily manual laborers, some were highly educated and worked as advisors to the rulers. Some were so respected that they became kings/emperors and founded their own dynasties. In short, "slavery" is a vague status in historical terms, slavery practiced in the Americas could be completely different from slavery in different cultures and eras.

I don't have any experiences with horses but just looking at Ghost it's not hard to imagine even a medieval criminal would have anthropomorphized his horse and seen him more as a partner in crime than just an animal to be exploited. Great video. Thanks. Mills are a little more complex than that though. At the time mills were cutting edge technology. They were very expensive to build. So the Lord and the Church who also built mills, had to force people to use them and pay. This resulted in a law being passed such that people were not allowed to mill at home using their small Roman style hand mills. /militia were then sent to every house breaking uo the peoples mills. Recently I discoverred that in very out of the way places cottagers continued to mill at home. I expect the militia stopped at a tavern rather than trek the distance.

Curious the peas sound like the presentation for edamame in Japan The sheep feet have a similar equivalent in Filipino cuisine, crispy pata, a braised pigs foot that’s fried before serving with a side of spicy vinegar for dipping For the cook shops that cook food for you also have a modern equivalent. Game processors will trade cuts of meat and sausage for whole animals. The extra meat would be payment for the labor. I can see how adventurers, trappers, and hunters bringing their kills to trade for prepared food like salted meats and sausages.
