How does loss affect customer bandwidth
@VanTekConsultingАй бұрын
Thank you for the question. Loss would not have any effect on bandwidth, unless it got below the minimum (around -29dBm), in which case the circuit would be out of service. I will try to make a video on your question with a better explanation.

It could be used on a fiber that is live i.e. has light on it, but since the connector is disconnected for inspection, the circuit would be down.

Hi, friend. I have a team OTDR JDSU MTS 2000Apparently the SC optical port is damaged. Due to poor "cleaning" practices. Apparently the connector ferrule is scratched, which causes very poor contact and obviously completely erroneous measurements. Is there an easy way to replace it?
@VanTekConsulting7 ай бұрын
The connector can be replaced, I got a $1300 quote from Viavi for one of my modules. I would like to see the connector if you have a scope, as well as a shot so I can see the launch conditions. Another reason for bad measurements could be the adapter, especially the swapable adapters. If these get damaged, the connector doesn't remain seated, causing errors in the shot.

Per the International Electro Technical Commission (IEC) standards body states IPA should not be used on connectors because it can contaminate them and cause degraded performance due the hygroscopic characteristics. An open bottle of IPA will lose 7% of it's purity in 15 minutes. So IF you are having high loss splices, I would look at the entire preparation process. As I say, this MAY be a contributor. Thanks for the comment.

It doesn't matter

If you never get a bubble in your splices, then that's win. From the folks at Chemtronics "The hygroscopic nature of IPA is very pronounced. IPA exposed to the air will absorb moisture rapidly until it reaches an equilibrium value of 65% IPA to 35% water."

@@VanTekConsulting I had a tech to come out and install fiber internet on a 1gb service. His reading from the ONT was -20 for optical (I believe this is a light test perform). My question, is this a good reading and am I getting full light transmission? because I find my download speeds caps at usually 500 mbps on downloads but upload is near 1gb at 940mbps. The tech as well as his supervisor say therr isn't a problem at fault. I'm relatively new to fiber and just want to ensure I'm getting what I am paying for. Any advice would be appreciated.
@VanTekConsulting5 ай бұрын
@brod3rick870 I would assume that the -20 dBm reading was from the OLT (downstream), the ONT needs > -29 dBm (closer to positive) to be stable. Light levels don't affect throughput, they are related to connectivity. Speeds can be affected by the site you are downloading from, server load, traffic shaping, etc.. The PON profile could be wrong. Are you using wired or wireless? That could be an issue. Lots of other factors to look at. If your service isn't dropping, it's not a light issue. Hope this helps.

hello, great video there, i have a question, how to test my own ONT? can it be done with this power Meter? thanks in advance
@VanTekConsulting Жыл бұрын
Thank you. Testing you own ONT is not really necessary after installation unless it is completely dropping offline, then it would be up to the provider to rectify the issue. It's more the case of you have light or not. You also run the risk of contaminating a connector with dirt which would cause an issue. That said, if you know what wavelengths are on your PON, it would be possible, but not advisable for an end user to use this type of meter. Just to be clear, the power level of the light does not equate to lower latency, higher speeds, more bandwidth, etc. Hope this helps.

The application specific meter to test xPON would be the correct meter to use. These range in price based on brand, options, location, etc. and are a typically a few thousand dollars. I that is not in the budget, then you could use a standard power meter understanding there may be a bit of variance that needs to be corrected or allowed for. This option is better than not taking any measurement in my opinion. Hope this helps, thank for the question.

Thanks for your information! Could you tell me which keys I press for the calibration of the OLP-38?
@VanTekConsulting2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. Actual calibration needs to be done by the factory, When measuring in dB (which is a relative value) you can tap the REF button to zero out, or set your reference level to Zero. Example, if you are measuring in dBm your transmitter power level is -10 dBm (absolute value), and your receive level is -15 dBm (absolute value), your loss is 5 dB (relative value between the two absolutes). Alternatively, you could measure in dB, at the transmitter and "Zero" the meter by taping REF (telling the meter that -10 dBm is zero). When you measure at the receiver, the meter would read -5 dB. Using the dB measurement saves you from doing the math, but IF you forget to redo the reference on the next measurement, it will skew your results. Hope this helps.

@@VanTekConsulting Thanks for replying! Yes, I've already done that, but I have another Veex powermeter and an Anritsu otdr that have the measurement calibrated and the same, the OLP-38 is measuring 1dbm above and I wanted to make them all the same.

@@MAMTECNOLOGIA If you are saying that the VeEx and the Anritsu (I assume you are using the PM function on the OTDR, or are you shooting a known fiber?) are measuring the same, one possibility is that the connector on the OLP-38 is damaged. @VanTekConsulting2 жыл бұрын
There is an option in Stratasync to lockdown meters on connect if they are lost or stolen. If this is your meter and the last company had it associated with their account, then enabled the feature, it is possible that it got locked. The only way I know of is to contact them and have them release the meter from their account. Hope this helps.

I remember finding your videos when I started at JDSU back in 2014. Thanks for putting them out there! We are known as Viavi now, but we do have a new higher powered VFL now - the FFL-105 - 5mW. Keeps it in the eye safety range for laser (class 3R) and gives a boost to the power, should be helpful around those PON cabinets for quick bend checks! Reminder to techs to check your launch cables with this too, been in the field too many times and have seen bad OTDR connections error messages, most of the time due to a microbend around jumper connectors (sometimes you'll microbend / break by accidentally closing lid on the jumper) or a gunked up OTDR port.

@tmgcommunications95074 жыл бұрын
Licenses are pushed via StrataSync when you purchase them. Or they are sent to you via USB drive. Either way, you cannot enable these options without having root access, or paying for them.
@VanTekConsulting4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. As #TMGCommunications states, all of these are paid upgrades. Keep in mind that not all users require all functions so it's an "Ala Carte" type of licensing. This is also a training meter, so typically you wouldn't see all of these functions enabled (or used) in a field meter. Even in training I only use a few of the functions (guessing maybe 30%?). As a note, if you buy used equipment, you always want to ask for a screen shot of the licensing. Just because a device is "Capable" doesn't mean it is licensed to do it.
