The whistle on 89 was an IC 3 Chime, one of the shop guys bought it and wanted to hear it on steam, due to its size it had to be put on 89 so it could fit in the engine house

If you commented on this video specifically because you live in New York then these areas are quite good (if not then see below): ► Near NYC and the Lower Hudson Valley is 'Mine Dock Park' in Fort Montgomery, NY. ► West of Albany is Voorheesville, NY that has the 'Albany County Rail Trail Pavilion.' ► Fairport, NY east of Rochester has the 'Fairport Junction Train Viewing Platform.' ► On the western side of the state in Westfield, NY is the 'Westfield Railfan Park.' ► 30 mins south of Westfield, NY in Pennsylvania is North East that has the 'Lake Shore Railway Museum.' In the eastern half of the country the absolute best places for sheer amount of trains are around Chicago, in Ohio, and one in Pennsylvania: ► Chicagoland Area ► Rochelle, Illinois ► Galesburg, Illinois ► Berea, Ohio ► Fostoria, Ohio ► Deshler, Ohio ► Marion, Ohio ► Altoona, Pennsylvania In the middle of the country is: ► North Platte, Nebraska ► Kansas City, Missouri / Kansas I haven't been on the west coast or southern states for train watching so I can't give you any specific locations.

Hey Union Pacific!!! Take note of this! This what you needed/need to do with the BigBoy... get rid of those stupid diesel engines and show the true power of steam. It's awesome to see such power from 1 steam engine.

Well, I just returned from 5 days of filming trains in Elkhart. Had the time of my life, and even filmed at night as you did. Caught the 930pm Amtrak #30, but couldn't stay up for #48 after midnight. Got over 90 trains on film and toured the museum too. Great place!
@Espee91803 жыл бұрын
That's great to hear! Glad you had a good time.
@paulmatulavich73213 жыл бұрын
Thanks for posting this, because nobody films at night, and that's what I wanted to do. Wanted to make the 4 hour drive from Ohio to Elkhart. Never been there. Is this a safe place to be at night? Platform lit all night? Thanks for a great video!
@Espee91803 жыл бұрын
I've only been here at night until Amtrak 30 the Capitol Limited makes its stop at 9:30pm, but I'm pretty sure the lights are on all night. What I do is park on the west end of the station building and walk across the dirt / ballast to the platforms when I hear something on the scanner. The Amtrak ticket office / waiting room opens a half-hour before 30 is scheduled to arrive, so you can hang out in there as well. It's gotten better safety wise in my opinion over the last few years as the downtown area has had a revival of sorts. Plus the Virtual Railfan camera that's there is always watching the scene.
@paulmatulavich73213 жыл бұрын
@@Espee9180 Thank you very much for your expertise and advice. (Did not know about #30). Night filming has its challenges so few do it, but those bright lights will help. I'll let you know how I make out.

They seem to be system wide symbols, and by that I mean any grain train could get those symbols no matter where it originates and terminates.
@epiccsx3 жыл бұрын
@@Espee9180 I was wondering that, so basically it usually originates at different places? Basically, one day it could originate at Muncie, IN and then two days later it could originate at Mansfield, OH

@Espee91803 жыл бұрын
The sound comes from the track being slightly higher / flexing at the crossing and the truck springs compressing. You can also hear it on the train before as well.

I went to Railfest once when I was about 9. I didn’t see 1983 (apparently it had caught fire and was being repaired elsewhere) and I don’t recall 2010, 7400 or 7964 there either. However I did see all the other heritage units as well as Sd70ace #8444. I wish I could’ve seen all of these but at least I got to visit here. Bailey Yard is an amazing place.

What Palmer Sub said. It was a one off move to retrieve and relocate empty autoracks. Another one may run loaded or unloaded at some point , but it's not likely as NS embargoed autorack traffic now.

I see you film with a Sony. What is your opinion of the Sony FDR AX700? Do you think it would make a good railfanning camera? Thank you!
@Espee91804 жыл бұрын
The AX100 is a well liked and reviewed camcorder. It would be a good camera for railfanning in my opinion if you want a 4K camera. I have the AX33 and my friend has the AX53 and likes it if you want to save a few dollars. Can't really go wrong on the Sony FDR line.

That's awesome that you caught all six of the fallen-flag heritage units strung together like that! I've lucked onto all six of them, but just one at a time over the years. And at 4:40, I see you caught one of the steam locomotives; I couldn't tell which one it is. Please forgive this self-promotion, but I thought you'd like this time-lapse video I took the one time I visited the Bailey Yard: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJPCgqxpl7WraJo
