Thanks guys for vid. Special thanks to Tony for mentioning PNW. I wanted to take a closer look at MX but ended up buying PNW. Only reason for not buying both is that may brother picked up MX. So now, once AA delivers, we will have both. Thanks again!

I bought this game shortly after watching this. Now after playing it a handful of times, this is a really nice product. The modular board is refreshing, building your own board every game makes a fun dynamic to engage people right from the start. This is a great game to start new people on 18xx along with 46, 89, MS, and Chesapeake. It's nice that they seemed to leave a lot of rules up for "adaption" to how you want to play it. This can be good and bad though, many of us are used to specific things that are supposed to drive game play. How many tri-tiles do you use in a 3-player long game? How many for 4-players? The variability of board size is an interesting and challenging option.

I'm sorry guys, but I will not be Kickstarting. The subject looks provocative and design well-made. But I'm tired of finding characters who would not have been part of the historical representation being pigeon-holed into a game. This is clearly either forced DEI or a mistaken notion by the designers, virtually always white males, who feel compelled to adjust history to fit a narrative. But it feels like pandering. Many of us are tired of it, and so will vote with the pocketbook. Still, good luck with the project.

Oh man, I think I'm going to have to buy yet another 18xx. At least I have time to play the ones I own before this one comes out. How is this one at 3 players?
@dominickduhamel13 ай бұрын
As the designer I'm obviously biased but I think it works great with 3. One of my design goals was that the game worked equally well at 3, 4, and 5. This is partly because 3p game nights are very common in my neck of the woods and, IMO, there aren't a ton of 18xx games that work great at that count.

I think this was a poor choice of game from GMT, they had big 18xx momentum going. But it looks like it is going to make it. Hoping for a big stocks focused game in the future.

Great video series! A quick note, that the "D" in 1D and 2D Stock Markets stands for Dimension, not direction. In one dimension there are two directions in a linear fashion (such as a straight line left-right, or up-down, but not both), and in two dimensions you have four directions (think of them as length and width, but missing depth, or up-down, and right-left in these 2D stock markets). I'd love you to do some Sidings covering the Operational Rounds, such as about Trains, and Laying Track.

My initial comment was too harsh. This guys rock for going with the purple. But I do find the game bland.
@kentslocum4 ай бұрын
I think that the generic fantasy setting of the game does lend itself to being a bit non-specific. However, I have found that the bold lettering, clear iconography, and cartographic art lets my imagination run wild, conjuring up ideas of what the world looks like and filling in details where none are provided. 😊
@135Pandemonium4 ай бұрын
@@kentslocum I was not talking about the art when I said bland. The game's mechanics are bland.
@kentslocum4 ай бұрын
@@135Pandemonium Really? They seem pretty solid and well-tested to me. The idea for Railways of the Lost Atlas never was to be chock-full of extremely original and novel ideas; rather, the goal was combine the best parts of 18xx and Euro board games to create something that bridged the gap and served as a solid entry in either category. I don't know your board game background (I assume you have played other 18xx games), but this is my first 18xx-adjacent game and everything about it is novel and new to me. Nothing about the mechanics are bland or boring--but that's probably because I haven't played the games from which the ideas have been borrowed. In fact, I'm not even sure whether your comment can even be considered a criticism of the game, since "bland" mechanisms have nothing to do with whether a game is good or not. Monopoly isn't a bad game because you roll dice--it's a bad game because it requires players to be bankrupted in order for the game to end. There are plenty of good games that involve rolling dice, even if dice-rolling is a "bland" mechanism used in many, many games.

@@kentslocum I play 18xx games weekly yes. If you keep digging into 18xx you will look back into your comment in a few years and realize. Novel? No. New to you? Alright. If it brings new people to the hobby that is a good thing.

At 15:27, you express disappointment that the round wooden tokens are only screen-printed on one side; however, I would like to point out that the one-sided printing is not a cost-cutting move. Instead, it is a very deliberate and clever choice. The screen-printed tokens are used on on the stock tracker (among other things), and they are flipped over to their blank side to help players keep track of which company has taken its turn during the operating round. Once every company has taken its turn, the tokens are flipped back to their printed side, and the next operating round begins. If the tokens were screenprinted on both sides, it would be very difficult to keep track of whose turn it is. 😊
@GameAllNiteShow4 ай бұрын
While true, a reverse print on the stock market tokens also has fixed this issue.
@LHCper3 ай бұрын
Some games used a cross over corporation logo on the reverse side, so it is quite clear it is for a company that has run. This is can be an issue in games that has a lot of different corporations, as colors might be close.

I’ve played the game 10-15 times so far with 2, 3, and 4 players. Mostly random short game mode with 1 long game. I’m more of an 18xx newbie, only really played a few titles but this one has been my favorite by far. An incredible blend of “euro” board game and 18xx, perfect graphic design and color palette. I love the minors, their names and powers, I love building out the map, revealing the minor order, and then just staring at the board for 5 minutes while I plan out my first move. We went the longest time thinking a cycle 4 minor start was impossible to pull off effectively, but my friend ended up doing it in our last game and won by $4! We love the game and are incredibly excited for the upcoming expansion, and any other games Asterisk has planned. Thanks all for the great interview and the great game. ✌🏻

It might seem like a small thing but I really like the font they used for the companies on their board and tokens. The people I play with had a lot of problems reading the fancy gothic font used in Dortmund. Might seem small but every bit helps when everyone is getting tired near the end of a game.
