I met a WWII Kriegsmarine sailor when living in Germany. His ship was sunk and he was taken prisoner and sent to Canada. He told me he and his fellow sailors (POWs) worked cutting down trees and dreamed of being back home in Germany. When repatriated, learned of the war crimes, he was horrified and said, “We all knew nothing about the atrocities “. Given the state of Germany after the war, he went on to say, “I dreamed of being back in Canada.”

Is there a version of the film dubbed in English? Or subtitles only?

Can you imagine the damage they could inflict, if they had ever been able to put a RADAR on it, just like the Americans did on the "GATO"'s ?

Very possibly the best Naval war movie since The Cruel Sea. Great performances by all but particularly Juergen Prochnow as the "old man".

Was there any kind of system or schedules in place for using the crapper? Crewmen couldn't just wait ......

T 72 is a beautiful tank. It's streamlined for combat. Nothing else.

I saw Juergen Prochnow the other evening, in another very different, but also amazing film, on T.V. Called "Remembered". It was about an old people's home in America .One of them sought someone he called "A friend", but who was actually in charge at Auschwitz, where the first man was a prisoner. But it's called REMBERED, because when they met, the man pointed out to the one from the old people's home (who FORGOT things because he had dementia), that actually they were BOTH forced by the Nazis to run the place! Not as grim a film as it sounds, very clever instead! I expect Germany has the equivalent of oskar for good acting - and I expect Jurgen Prochnov has quite a few! AND -(This is an order!) You really need to see Juergen Prochnoff in a film from 2 years later, 1983, called THE KEEP. You know, the fortress in the middle of a castle. It is my favourite film, a science fiction film with ALSO fantastic music, but not like in The Boat. It is the very best of 1980' synthesizer music, by none other than Tangerine Dream!

You can literally yell "ALAAAAARM!" at any German man at or above the age of fourty and they instantly know what you're referring to :D Jokes aside, this is the best submarine movie ever made (and beyond). Any submariner will agree that this depicts how it is and that the other movies are made out of crap (with the exception of Operation Petticoat, obviously).

The boat was designed for a crew of 24 people but in wartime the crew was doubled to 48. So...it was not designed for war and its use in warfare came as a surprise?

Best thing I have seen in years. Donitz should of outlawed food in any of the bathrooms. You have to have some semblance of hygiene on the boat. If not the morale goes down.

This movie, Das Boot, really suprised med how good it was. I didnt think I could stand all those hours. But it went easily. However, I really realised I could NEVER have lived on a u-boat like this. Impressive how others could.
