I like the HD16 very much... high performance, high quality and an intutitive and innovative rotary switch. I own all of the Wurkkos headlights (HD10, HD15, HD15R, HD16,HD20 and HD50). The rotary switch makes the difference, since you can change the combination of spot and flood with only one switch. I own the Sofirn HS21, which come closest to performance and features, but the HD16 has a slight edge over it due to this rotary switch. The rotary switch of the HS21 can alter flood and spot separately, but has separate memory function for each channel. But you could not change both channels with one switch simultaneously.

I also think that exist more copies, produced by many factories, that have different steel… but coincidentally this magnetism is in both my Brakimo (yes, I’ve got 2 of them) and in all the other TOPS clones I bought on Ali… a bit strange. There is a type of steel (that’s no possible to heat treat) that develops magnetism during the moulding process, maybe they used that steel in all.

I read about that somewhere. 1095 is not the optimal steel. They should use 3V, like the competition. Besides, the handles of their knives are unhygienic. They get dirty even from touching clean hands. There is always grease on the skin. And most ESEE knives have a matt micarta.*
@wismods2 ай бұрын
@user-ww4od4jl1f again, very strong points, but the whole initial philosophy of Esee was that they make hard use survival knives for the wilderness, and 1095 is a frequent choice due to its ease of sharpening, so I accept that, having used Kabar and TOPS knives with 1095 that hold a decent edge. Esee to me is overhiped and overpriced. I am selling my Izula as I can't get any pleasure using it, bad ergos, soft steel.

@@wismods *The argument about the ease of sharpening 1095 steel is also no longer relevant. Most current steels are also easy to sharpen due to their fine grain. In addition, to sharpen 1095 you also need a whetstone. Nowadays, there are small double-sided diamond whetstones readily available on which any type of steel can be sharpened. What difference does it make whether you have to draw the blade over the stone 10 or 20 times? Nobody sharpens a knife during a bear attack!*

In case anyone wants to know the differences between the real Brakimo and the knockoff, coming from someone that has both: 1. Tops uses micarta scales, this is very cheap plastic, possibly unsafe under stress 2. Tops has a kidex sheath with metal clip, this is something like ABS and a plastic clip that will break quickly 3. Tops is 1095 steel, this is either 440C or a 15cr variant. It is more corrosion resistant than 1095, but heat treatment is poor so bending a tip is an easy task. 4. Tops is $200 for a $50 knife, this is $20 for a $20 knife. Buy an Esee (fanboy recommendation)

I think you got extremely unlucky with the sheath. I’ve seen a lot of reviews of those knives and the fit looked extremely tight, with no play at all. Some even didn’t like how knife shoots out of the sheath once enough force is applied, because of how tight the fit is. If you have a way to contact the owner of owlknife they will most likely send you a replacement, if shipment to your country is possible. Price of the knife also includes lifetime “service”, you just send it to the company address and they sharpen it, remove any damages and polish it back to brand new state. But I’m not sure it’s economically viable, depending on how much shipment from your country will cost.

Thank you so much for the comment. I did a lot of research on Owl Knife prior to making this purchase. I took them for a reliable company that valued quality. This kind of flaw should not have been overlooked by them for an almost 300$ knife, but things happen, mistakes happen. For me it is very important that the company/store stand behind their products. I contacted both Rezat.ru (where I made thepurchase) and the owl knife company before I did the review video. I wanted to give them a chance to correct the mistake but none of them even replied. This is unacceptable and the reason why I uploaded the review. I made my own sheath that is better than the factory sheath from owl knife (even if it had a tight fit) so I am ok, but potential customers who decide to invest into their products should be aware of their non-existent customer service. Thanks again for your comment!

@@wismods I’ve just reached the part where you talk about it, sorry for not watching the review fully before writing my comment. I feel the same way as you - kinda expected (but still bad) from retailer but not from the company owner. But you’re right that there is someone else reading the mail, and not necessarily someone who speaks English. I’m considering buying one of their knives myself, that’s how I ended up finding your video. But it seems like those knives are made with no fool proofing at all - very thin grind and high hardness, which might not be a problem for me, but at some point I might give it to someone to use, and… well, as a knife enthusiast you can probably guess what’s troubling me :) Anyway, I hope the knife was worth it for you despite all the headache.
@wismods3 ай бұрын
@@vncore496 yes, I love the knife, but the handle is a bit too thin for a bushcraft knife. If I was to repurchasse I would probably go with the North S or North XS or even the Otus models. On this handel I also had to sand down all 4 corners along the handle. I have another video reviewing what I believe is an even better brand offering even better value, the video is called "these knives are too good.."
@vncore4963 ай бұрын
@@wismods Otus and barn are their “true” bushcraft knives. I think they market north models as a hunting/skinning/fish/food knife. If somehow you end up wanting to buy another owl knife, I suggest you skip retail and order directly from the company. There (unlike retail) you can choose the grind (for north models it’s convex, skandi, straight and rhombus(or diamond), handle material and color, sheath color and I believe there is also some room for custom spine thickness. And maybe make sure they don’t fuck up your sheath again. And I know you didn’t ask for any advice from me - but still, in my opinion, don’t go for “super” steels, it’s not worth paying ~$300 when even the basic n690 is heat treated so well it can performs 200 rope cuts, while the same n690 from a popular mass production brand will only be able to do around 80. And being more than two times less expensive while still having more than good enough steel, it’s a completely different knife value wise. I’ll probably end up buying north s model with n690 and micarta handle. Though I can’t decide on the grind. Convex seems the best option but also the trickiest to sharpen.
@wismods3 ай бұрын
@@vncore496 totally agree about the choice of steel, I just wanted to try out the magnacut. Otherwise they do have other good steels, I would probably go with CPR. I also wanted to get the knife without having to wait, so I went with a retailer, nonetheless, that does not excuse the retailer or the company itself ignoring my issue of the defective sheath. I probably won't be bying from Owl Knife for now, I don't see any models that light my spark. And the North S is probably a better option than the North F, so go for it, and I would recommend the convex. I use the worksharp ken onion sharpener with the blade grinding attachement to do alll my convex grinds and I couldn't be happier. I take a few minutes per knife and gets hair splitting results.

They both re-sharpen very easily using an Accusharp carbide sharpener As a all around camp tool I feel they work extremely well. I can see where they would be a devastatingly effective self defense weapon. I can not speak to their effectiveness as a survival knife, and they wouldn't be my first choice. @airiksknifereviews9548 No, I hadn't seen the Pathfinder until now. Very different blade and handle from the owl knife I have. I have never purchased a Real Steel before even though a couple of their designs have also caught my attention. I don't trust their choice of steel and heat treatment, but I may be wrong. If you like convex I strongly recommend Owl Knife and Southern Cross. Both have i credible convexes that start from the spine, they have secondary micro edges, but I took them straight down very easily. Both these brands are Russian though, so you may not be able to buy them, but I was amazed at their quality. Russia in general makes junk, and I am a freak on qc, obsessive even, but these knives amazed me. Also Russia is an occupant of my country (Georgia), so I have a bucket of negative feelings, I am not trying to promote anything Russian, but I am a fair man and try to live truthfully. Out of my entire collection, these three I have (2 southern cross and 1 owl knife) are the best blades in terms of design and qc. Also, southern cross leather sheaths are the best by far. I don't have a cheap collection, so I am comparing with 150-350 dollar knives.
